It is possible in certain circumstances, to claim a refund of motor tax. Your application for a refund, should be made directly to you local motor tax office.

Click here to view motor tax refund form

You may be entitled to a refund if

    the vehicle has been:
    scrapped/destroyed or permanently exported
stolen and has not been recovered by the owner.
not taken out or used in a public place at any time since the issue of the current disc

the owner of the vehicle has ceased to use the vehicle because of:
Illness, injury or other physical disability
Absence from the state for business or educational purposes, to use the vehicle,
service overseas with the Defence Forces

Tax discs must be surrendered immediately as refunds are generally calculated from the first of the month following the surrender of the disc. A minimum of three unexpired whole calender months must be left on the disc when surrendered. Where a vehicle has been scrapped you will need a certificate of destruction issued by an End-of-Life Vehicle (ELV) Authorised Treatment Facility.

    Hi,

My dad paid is road tax in May for the yr. He's changing car tomorrow as is current car is shagged. Can he transfer over to the new car or does he have to fork out another €385

    The tax can't be transferred.

All may not be lost though. If he gets his old car scrapped and obtains an end of life certificate for it then he can claim back the remaining tax in 3 month blocks, so 9 months should be reclaimable.

He'll have to fork out I'm afraid.

This is the reason why I'd never tax my 14 year old micra for more than 3 months

I'd never heard of that before.
I always thought that it was non refundable and non transferable.

10Q. Can I apply for a motor tax refund?
10A. Yes. You can apply for a refund on your motor tax if your vehicle has been:
Scrapped or destroyed by an Authorised Treatment Facility (ATF)
    Stolen and not been found.
Sent out of Ireland permanently, e.g. sold abroad
Not used in a public place because you are absent from Ireland for business, educational reasons or with the Defence Forces
Not used in a public place because of owner illness or injury
There must be a full three calendar months of unexpired tax remaining on the disc for a refund application to be considered. All applications for a refund must be made to your local Motor Tax Office, irrespective of whether you taxed online or in a Motor Tax Office. In order to apply for a refund you need to complete an RF120 form. This form must be witnessed and stamped by a member of An Garda Siochana. This form is available at your local motor tax office or can be got on our homepage under the link 'Motor Tax Forms'.

You will be able to claim the tax back once you get a cert of destruction for the car, it will take about 8 weeks from the day you scrap the car until you get the cheque in the post. The cert of destruction will take roughly 4 weeks to go through in Shannon and then another 4 weeks for the refund request to go through.

    8 weeks???

So what does he do for the while waiting for the refund? He doesn't have another €400 to tax this car.

Can you get anything from the guards while waiting.

    Google is your friend:

    From http://www.environ.ie/en/LocalGovernment/MotorTax/Refunds/

Applications for refunds of motor tax can be made to you local motor tax office, on Form RF120, in circumstances when,
The vehicle has been scrapped/destroyed* or sent permanently out of the state,
The vehicle has been stolen and has not been recovered by the owner,
A vehicle in respect of which a tax disc has been taken out has not been used in a public place at any time since the issue of the disc,
The owner of the vehicle has ceased, because of illness, injury or other physical disability, to use the vehicle,
The owner of the vehicle has ceased, because of absence from the state for business or educational purposes, to use the vehicle,
The owner of the vehicle has ceased, because of service overseas with the Defence Forces, to use the vehicle.

    *Scrapped/Destroyed Vehicles:
Scrapped/destroyed passenger cars/commercial vehicles up to 3,500 kg gross vehicle weight are subject to compliance with the End-of-Life Vehicles (ELV) regulations.
Before a refund can be processed the vehicle must be taken to an End of Life Vehicles (ELV) Authorised Treatment Facility and a Certificate of Destruction issued by the facility in respect of the vehicle.
The reference date for refund of motor tax will be the date of issue of the Certificate of Destruction.

You'll need to scrap the car and get an end of life certificate from the dismantler. send a copy to the tax office and a refundcwill be given for either 3, 6 or 9 months. So if you have 10 or 11 months tax on the disc the best you'll get is 9 months refunded. Stupid policy but thats how they do it.

That's not totally correct, once theres a minimum of 3 full months tax on the car you can claim back the tax for the total remaining months, not in 3 month blocks. i.e if you have 10 months tax remaining you can claim a refund for the full 10 months
