going looking at a 2005 diesel fiesta that took in water ...

engine seems to be goosed ,,, just wondering what kind of damage it may have done & if maybe it could be saved ?

or would a replacement be the handiest option ?

I'd save myself the trip TBH.. the electrics are probably destroyed and problems will manifest themselves over months

It's not just the engine and ECU though, water gets into everything including all the electrics. Your also looking at extensive corrosion in places you may not be able to see. It will also stink no matter how much you try to mask.

That car will never be the same, do yourself a favour and look at something else.

OP how deep was the water? Was it fresh water or salt? Did it enter the cabin?

It's very possible the engine sucked in some water and has suffered hydraulic lock. In other words it's fecked but the rest of the car may be fine if the water wasn't deep. You'll just have to have it checked over. I have seen cars with engine swaps that have been fine after. I've also seen cars that have been fixed and been utterly horrible to live with.

More details are needed but tbh I'd say it's fecked. If there was enough water to stall engine chances are it also have had an effect on electrics and other things.
If you don't know what you're doing OP or have a handy mechanic then it's best to keep moving.
Don't buy trouble - trouble comes after you buy :D

Chances are there's damage to the rods/block/head. Coupled with the possibility of various sensors that may be affected along with the wiring, I'd be looking for another car :(
