My girlfriend is buying a car this week and she is going to view both a 1.4 focus and 1.4 307. Both are 2002 and she has her heart set on one of these two cars. Just like to get peoples opinions on which is the better option and people experiences of both?

    Focus. Because it's not French.

Focus because its not a 307

    Or a corolla

the 1.4 focus are roughly 75bhp and woefully underpowered, go for the 1.6 if she is getting one. This point has already been made on another thread here today...

The Focus, the Focus, and thrice the Focus.

    Preferably a 1.6 though.

Make sure it's a focus zetec.

The 1.4 engines can give trouble.
    1.6 much better.

None of the two. If it must be a 1.4 there are much better options out there.

She wants to stay around 1.4 for tax reasons. What options would you consider ?

    As said above corolla.

    As said above corolla.

Corollas are fairly pricey though, you are nearly talking a grand more for the same year.

What price range are you in?

A 2002 1.4 Civic would be a good option. Completely bulletproof and cheaper than the Corolla.

She has roughly 1500 , with possible bit more for something exceptional.

You'd get a corolla for 2k to be fair,
It's not exceptional looking, or exceptionally comfortable etc but they rarely go wrong. That has to be worth a few quid.
    Saloons are cheaper than hatchbacks.

Cheaper than a corolla yes but more reliable no. those ep civics gave gearbox and power steering issues.

for tax reasons? if its between the 1.4 and 1.6 focus, the difference between driving something with the acceleration of snail and something semi acceptable, is E130 a year, 35c a day! The tax is cheap, whether its a 1.1,1.2,1.3,1.4,1.5,1.6...

Anything but a 307 really. They were not that good when new, dodgy electrics, wouldn't take a chance on a 12 year old example

Local garage has 02 focus for 1000 with nct until october so think she going for it. Seems like low risk car at that price. Thanks for the help.
