Its basically the same Peugeot engine as the focus/s40/308 so you need on-time oil changes using the right oil.
Main dealer FSH is what you're after tbh

I agree with Colm. Those Peugeot engines are good but quality oil is critical and the service interval is too long. If you buy it you would be well advised to reduce the oil change interval to 9k miles or less.

The 115bhp 6 speed in that model 3 is proving more reliable than the older 110bhp 5 speed.

The s40 is having rotten reviews after 100k, is this something to be worried about

Anything to lookout for when test driving

"Chuffing" sound from the engine while idling means the injector seals are blowing and need to be replaced, it's a common problem. Open the bonnet and listen.

I bought one of these myself recently. I'm no mechanic so can't add much to what's already been said above on that front... same engine as the focus, look for a solid dealer service history etc.

One thing I read about online was that some people had issues with water getting into the boot from the boot open button (I think it's more an issue in the saloon than the hatchback and may well have been fixed by 2011). Have a good feel in around the spare tyre in the boot to make sure there's no moisture.

Other than that great car to drive, especially on the bendier N roads. They seem by default to have a decent spec level (didn't test drive one that didn't have cruise control) which is what swung it for me over the focus. Just did the maths on my first tank of diesel and got 50mpg (mixture of N roads, motorways and town driving)
