    Controller was correct.

He was asking the Thompson to hold short 9L which requires a readback. If a light aircraft was "possibly" in the way that is up to the Thompson crew to decide. As it turned out they were not happy to taxi past so close to the light aircraft which is fine but rather than get all ratty they could have read back "Roger Hold short 9L we will just wait until that light aircraft moves before we continue taxi" though even this is not required they should simply wait until the light aircraft departs then continue taxi.

It would be the same as if the controller issued the same instruction when rather than a light aircraft in the way it was 4 jumbo jets already holding 9L. Would crew come back with "Do you expect us to taxi over those four Jumbo jets to get to 9L" No, you taxi up behind them and when they move, you move. No difference.

Your given your clearance limit, you read it back and taxi there. If another aircraft/ vehicle is in the way then wait until it moves then continue taxi. Don't make a song and dance about it.
