What are you playing Rpg edition?

Another waste of time no doubt but I'll give it a go since I'm generally only playing rpgs. This might be an opportunity to mention some lesser known games or even discuss long released well known games. Anyway I'm currently playing:-

Dragon Age 2 (almost finished, final act) - Playing a mage and while it's not as good as the first game I have been quite surprised by how much I have enjoyed it after all I heard. I actually don't mind the quick combat. Perhaps something between the speed of both the first and second would be ideal. I hate the lack of an overhead view because I do like my area of effect spells. Hate the conversation wheel too as it is far too easy to see your character saying something you didn't expect. There are other complaints but really it's a very enjoyable game overall in my opinion.

Eschalon Book 1 (just starting out) - This is an indie isometric rpg in the mold of Baldur's Gate or the later Ultima games and it's great fun. Quite tricky at low level and the combat is not as tactical as it might suggest but overall I think for the price it's very good. Followed up with a sequel which was also praised and there seems to be a good buzz around the upcoming release of Book 3 too. So plenty of gaming here.

Morrowind (early days) - Watching a video on Skywind reminded me there was a major overhaul for the original game so I installed it and it looks great so I'm expecting to finally finish a game I disgracefully have owned since it came out but never completed.

Started playing Shadowrun Returns (I think I'm almost finished) over the Christmas while I was separated from my Xbox, was very impressed. Must get back to it at some stage, especially with Dragonfall coming out.

Eschalon looks very interesting, might pick that up to tide me over till Project Eternity comes out.

Either only two of us on boards are actively playing rpgs or this forum is dead. I'm going to plump for the latter sadly.

games/games steals the limelight from here unfortunetly, but yeah, mostly playing starbound on steam, not exactly an rpg, more of a terraria type dealie. Aside from that, WoW, and the occasional bit of skyrim exploring, no other RPG's have really grabbed me recently. is it just me or has the genre been really dull since ME3?

State of Decay was pretty decent, but not a whole lot of rp in it either. I'm looking forward to Project Eternity though, or rather Pillars of Eternity - ye can read some more about it here

I currently playing Dragon Age Origins for the first time. Never noticed it at release so bought DAO and DA II recently in a PSN sale.

I'm just finishing up some side quests before the Landsmeet so I assume I've not much left to do. I'm playing as a rogue but thinking I would have been better as a warrior with the way I play. My bow hardly ever gets used.

Yeah Pillars should be good. Maybe some of the big name rpgs threads should be moved here. Probably sacrilege though to be moving the like of the Skyrim thread in here.

I played a mage which was good fun but know little of how rogue/warrior plays. If you got the add-on Awakenings it's worth a go once you finish and some of the characters in Awakenings turn up in the sequel.

Morrowind with the Overhaul is amazing. I am hooked in now with no end in sight for a very long time.

I guess I'll pick up Awakenings if it's cheapish

eador masters of the broken world on steam. probably more of a strategy but there are strong rpg elements in it. love shadowrun, great game. hated dragon age and morrowind, could never get into those types of game

I liked the first dragon age, the second was well, crap.. i've tried about 3 or 4 times to replay it after the first time completing it and my will just wanes after the opening sequence.

The cutscenes and story from the original though are quality.

What specifically? The combat was very good imo if a little slow. Other than that I'm not sure what you mean.

I played DA:O when it came out but never finished it. I enjoyed the world and the back story, how characters interacted, stuff like that. Don't actually remember the specific quest arc/story but remember enjoying the world.

As for gameplay, i found it lacked in strategic and tactical depth. i've always preferred turn based, party control games with loads of options ie temple of elemental evil, baldur's gate series, etc. DA:O feels very much like a console game (ie built for twitchy fingers). I'm not knocking console games, or games that are based more on reaction timing that tactics, they're just not for me. action RPGs never have been my style

Currently 25 hours into Final Fantasy XIII and stuck on a serious boss, if you've played it, you know who I mean. I have FF VIII on steam but I don't think it's as good. Iv'e also got FF VI and Star Ocean: The last hope recently bought but barely touched yet!

(sometimes I think i might cry thinking about how long it'll take me to finish them all!)

i loved ffvii, not so much ffviii, but that could be down to sentimentality.

I played one of the later editions of FF, can't remember 10,11 or 12. not the online stuff. it was woeful, incredibly linear, in fact the linearity of it stopped me playing about halfway through, also seemed much shorter than FFVII

The issue partially is years ago most of the traffic here was about tabletop and CRPG discussion was mostly over on Games (I remember when the only active CRPG discussions on here were about groups of people doing Neverwinter). Games has the AH problem of a "broader audience" and tends to have a lot of threads on there that are really taking traffic away from other forums. MMO also takes some of the traffic because quite a few of the older RPG crowd and potential RPG crowd play them not single player games.

It also probably doesn't help if some kid who's ever known Skyrim comes in and sees someone like you or I talking about isometric AD&D style stuff. I could understand someone finding it difficult to put the two in the same genre.

Ah well maybe some chat can be had regardless. As a sort of an update I have been consumed by morrowind. The overhaul really is something. I'm already looking at Oblivion in terms of modding that to a similar level when I finish morrowind in a couple of years time :) There are lots of good mods for Oblivion but it seems that there still isn't anything satisfactory out there to make the whole view distance work well. There are mods to make almost everything visible which looks as ridiculous as not seeing anything and it's amazing to think that the object fade in for morrowind is so much better. Less overhead I suppose.

Playing Final Fantasy VII right now. I got it on sale on the Playstation Network.

I generally find it very hard to finish any RPG, but I've decided to try finish at least the main quest of Disgaea DS, and then move onto either Ni No Kuni or one of the Tales games.

Having never played a Disgaea game before, I'm quite enjoying it, tho I'm still very early on.

I finished Dragon Age Origins last week. Wasn't too impressed with the final boss fight. I barely even used the support troops in the lead up to the boss. I only used them because I wanted to see what they would do.

I started DA II after finishing the first. Playing as a mage this time and I'm really enjoying it so far. I am finding it annoying when the other characters in the party dont heal themselves even though I've set up their tactics to do so.

I started replaying Mount & Blade over the weekend. I'd managed to forget how fun that game is.

If you liked the story of Origins, you should check out Awakening if you didn't. It's great.

I had planned to get Awakenings but when I finished DAO but forgot about it and just went straight into DAII. I'm in the third act of DAII so should be finishing it in the next week or so I reckon. I havent been able to play it since last week which is a bit annoying.

I'll need to find myself another RPG once I'm done with DAII.

what would you recommend I play next?
I have played all the usual RPG's that I like, which are your DA's, Elder Scrolls, Witchers, Kingdoms of Amular, Risen, KOTOR,
So can anyone recommend a good non turn based, non Final Fantasy style, non isometric game like the above for me?

    picky aren't I ;)

Gothic 3 with latest community patch. The earlier Gothics first if you don't need cutting edge graphics. Just read up on the combat and how it works before diving in. If you like Risen you should like Gothic 3 even more. It's massive.
