Hi. Some club members have suggested not registering the club with cycling ireland this year to save money. Anyone know if there would be any negatives to doing this.

    Regards

Off the top of my head:

While individual members will be insured if they join CI, the club itself won't have any insurance.
The club won't be able to organise any events under the auspices of Cycling Ireland such as races or leisure rides.
The club would have no vote at the Cycling Ireland AGM.

Presumably individual members will be treated as unattached and required to pay higher CI fees, probably costing quite a bit more in total than the savings the club makes

EDIT - just checked - in the "racing" cats it's €30 extra to go unattached, and the club affiliation fees are up to €290 (depends on provincial fees, Connaught being the most expensive). Hence it only generates any financial savings if you have less than 10 full fee paying members

also any prospective new members who haven't joined CI would not get the three insured spins as the club would not be insured to have guests

If they are a leisure crowd then there would be no extra charge (25 per person). The big negative would be the lack of support or a voice if you need/want something from CI.

It's mostly leisure club. Will have to review it as would not be happy with people turning up and having to tell them they are not insured because club didn't renew insurance. Not a. Good example to set for the younger generation......
    Thanks for replys.

There is the legal issue, and more experienced posters will weigh in with more knowledgeable views but if you have a spin organised under the direction of your own club but have no insurance arranged, unless they sign a disclaimer (most of which are not worth the paper they are written on), then they could theoretically go after the senior members of the club in the event of an accident. Although how that would work, if at all, is beyond me. I would be more interested in joining for the protection of your committee than anything else.

"Organisers" of events are the ones that are responible for the arrangements surrounding it, including ensuring adequate safety arrangements are in place.

CI has published a guideline on how to orgainse an event - see here

It may not be absolutely clear who is involved in "organising" the event, but I suspect if ever brought to court a wide range of individuals could be held at least partly responsible should anything go wrong. That would certainly include Committee members as well as anyone specifically appointed by the Committee to make the relevant arrangements. Ensuring adequate insurance is in place is absolutely critical to anyone involved in arranging, officiating and indeed marshalling such an event.

Specific insurance may be arranged outside the auspices of CI (the IVCA have their own insurance for example), but for most events CI insurance is going to be the simplist (and probably cheapest) option

As far as I am aware (based on legal advice from a law talking dude in relation to another club that had no insurance), if a club is uninsured, all members of the club can be held liable, and pursued for damages if anything happens.

Although we allow comments on the legal situation, Boards does not allow professional advice to be sought or provided. If anyone wishes to consider the legal position they should seek proper professional advice

Sorry mods!! just to be clear, this was the advice I got in relation to my situation, I was in no way trying to offer legal advice. I would advise the club in question to get their own legal advice.
