I started a thread about the same year ages an ages ago, it got locked though lol it was a really good year for movies. The Matrix stealing all of Episode 1's thunder when it turned out to be rubbish (still one of the best trailers ever though)

The Matrix (Due to the Internet) the last film I saw not having a clue what it was about and just decided to go see it one rainy afternoon. Simply blown away by it in the end. Pity about the other two.

The Blair Witch: Again no Internet and I was a gullible enough teen to think that it was real while watching it. Having watched it again recently I realised it's quite ****e but I admire the money they made off it.

Fight Club: Not much to be said, brilliant film.

American Pie: I was like 15/16 so it was pretty much made for me. It's even held up pretty well.

Blue Streak: is a great shout I generally have no time at all for Lawerence he even annoys me during good films like bad boys but Blue Streak I really liked.

Drop Dead Gorgeous An inspired, spoof fly-on-the-wall documentary
Eyes Wide Shut An admittedly polarising swan song from Stanley Kubrick
Galaxy Quest A topnotch, affectionate sci-fi comedy
The Limey Possibly Steven Soderbergh's best film, with Terence Stamp on top form
One Day in September An exemplary documentary about the Black September attack on the Munich Olympics
The Thomas Crown Affair A rare case of a remake that's better than the original
The Virgin Suicides A suitably dreamlike adaptation of the book

Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai

Forest Whitaker is fantastic, Jarmusch's dialog and direction are pitch perfect. Very underappreciated film with dark humor and a wonderfully contemplative tone.

    Other favorites from the year:

    American Movie
    All About My Mother
    Audition
    Election
    The Irong Giant
    Magnolia
    Office Space
    A Room for Romeo Brass
    The Straight Story

Great shout on Election, really superb movie.

Fight Club spoke to me on many levels at the time as a 15 year old. It was so edgy and has had real rewatchability since.

The Matrix was astonishing at the time, like said above knew nothing about it going in - wonderful stuff.

American Beauty was revelatory at the time, I wonder if it holds up as well.

Toy Story 2 was an exceptional sequeal.

The Blair Witch Project was distinctly original and very innovative in how it marketed itself and whipped up interest and stands up for me as one of the most effective horror movies I've seen.

Being John Malkovich was a wonderful ride from start to finish

I liked the Insider, two brilliant leading turns and a very strong sense of justice throughout the whole thing

I suppose the question would be whether major American Cinema has produced better output within a calendar year since? I wouldn't think so off the top of my head.

Fight Club is probably the best film from the 90's the best Fincher and Pitt film to date. Went to see it on the first day of it's release and totally blew my mind especially that twist. Wasn't it a flop on it's release?. The DVD is well worth getting for it's extra's.

Ravenous is hugely underrated film especially seen as it had problems during production with directors been fired. Although the late Antonia Bird did a great job on it, this is all about it's performances from Guy Pearce and Robert Carlyle and it's completely bonkers premise especially once it get's to the third part of the film. Plus that Damon Albarn and Michael Nyman soundtrack is wonderful.

Run Lola Run was a film I would have put on the most overrated Foreign Films list a few years ago but I warmed to it lately, it's got that late 90's feel to it that I warm to now. Plus it doesn't out stay it's welcome and it's got a great performance from Franka Potente, who never really became the big star I taught she would become even though she was in the first two Bourne films.

The Insider is hugely underrated now when it comes to Crowe and Mann himself. It was the role Crowe should have won best actor for and Mann does a brilliant job and making sure Pacino doesn't over act like he's done since Scarface. Christopher Plummer is brilliant too in this. A bit of a downbeat film but Mann's last classic film for me.

A Room for Romeo Brass. A film considered a huge disappointment at the time of it's release cause of how well 24/7 did with critics and at award shows but actually Brass is now the better film for me. I think many were expecting a buddy film but shocked when that dark turn happens with Consindine's Morrell on the beach. Wonderful film not Shane Meadows greatest film but it's up there.
