Just wondering what the concensus is these days, is it better to be a driver for a year or 2 first in your own car on a provisional license or should you keep doing lessons and tests until you pass the driving test and then get a car?

Im leaning towards getting a small 1L car first and doing my test in that, had to book a test as on my third learner permit.

I'm a driving instructor and I suggest; lessons adding practice with family etc. Then practice for a few months. The pretest lessons.
It can be done with lessons alone. But it is much harder.
