Canon 600D Lens

Hi all. I bought a canon 600d a while back and was/am clueless about lenses etc. It came with an 18-55mm lense and I was shocked to find that this basically has no zoom! I know - clueless. As even compact cameras these days have really good zooms I just assumed the lens my canon came with would have a good one too.
Anyway my question is - what lens should I get now to allow me to zoom in on things far away?

Hey, the 18mm-55mm is pretty good for landscapes and portraits starting out. If you are looking to get right in, you will probably need something like a 55-300mm which will cover you right up.

A zoom lens will not produce images to the standard of a fixed lens, but they are more versatile.

If I were to purchase a zoom lens I would probably go for the likes of the 70-300mm (I would much prefer to get a fixed lens though) which you can see here;

Thanks - I'll have a look. When you say "fixed lens" do you mean you would rather buy a camera that has just one permanent unremoveable lens?
Also - there is such a big price difference between the 70-300 and 75-300 - is there as big a difference in quality?

I got a Sigma 70-300mm soon after getting my 600D and would advise you get one with Image Stabilization (IS) like the first two that are linked above. The Sigma is fine on a bright day or with a tripod but otherwise it's hard to get a good shot.

A fixed lens only has one focus. Like if you got a 300mm lens, you could zoom in and out, it would just be fixed. It has a specific job. If you were bird watching for instance, this could benefit you.

The 70-300 has IS and USM. That's image stabilizer and Ultra Sonic Motor.

My other half has a zoom lens which has the USM and it's fantastic. Really quiet and super fast at focusing. I have a non USM lens and it's noisey and quite slow to focus.

I would read the reviews and see what people say about it on Amazon. Generally if you are paying a higher price for a lens it will have a better build quality. Especially over £150 more :P It will probably have less plastic and will feel heavier in the hand. Best thing is to go into a camera shop and test them out

I bought the Sigma APO DG 70-300mm and I find it fantastic. I cannot justify buying Canon lenses at their price.

Got my canon 600 d at xmas from santa, bought the sigma 70-300f4 -5.6 dg os and the 10-20mm f4 -5.6 ex dc from sam mcauleys , have the canon ef 2.8 L 100mm macro is usm coming from ebay hong kong as we speak.

Excuse me for butting in, but for someone who is interested in taking up photography as a hobby, would you reccomend the 600D? First time buyer and people seem to say it's a good starting point? Sorry again

Yes well am sure people have different views I find the menus on the 600 d well layed out , the camera is out a few years and usually can be got a bit cheaper mine was bought in MC Cauleys for 499.99 before Xmas was 699.

Getting back to picking a lens now!!! I came across this on amazon -
