    This is a hypothetical situation

someone receives a private letter in the post which mentions a third party. The third parties character was questioned in this letter. The person who received the letter shows the letter to the third party
Would this be considered defamation of character in a legal sense ?

IF the contents of the letter defamed the third party as opposed to merely questioning the character, then by sending the letter to the receiver and defaming the third party it would be defamation in the legal sense.

If you are asking if the receiver of the letter is defaming the third party by showing it to them then the answer is no, unless they also show the content of the letter to someone else, which is a republication and will be defamation in the legal sense.
