anyone else fed up with people registering different user names and using them to pursue different agendas? I'm certainly pi55ed off with it, this forum is a great resource but can we keep it to a positive forum where like minded individuals offer positive help & advice to each other?

I honestly hadn't noticed. Am practicing the art of tuning out people like that.

Having multiple accounts isn't aloud as far as I know, you can be banned for having more than 1 i think..??

Why not report who you think is suspicious of doing so?

I dont have any problems with some that closes one account and reopens a under a new name, there are valid reasons for doing such

How would you know if it were the same person?

Why doesn't boards let you re-open an account after you have closed it?

Not hard if you follow this forum every day. You could like power washing, have a horn for jersey cows or be on your way to put manners on the boys in Syria etc....

I'd say more related to the email you register with. All of your home devices share 1 IP address, and this changes everytime your router is rebooted.

In fairness its a personal decision if someone wants to re-register, what difference does it make to you if they decide to change their username or not. there are loads of reasons someone might want or have to change and none of us are entitled to question this. Its supposed to be an anonymus forum, some people dont mind if others recognise them or not and some do.

Are you saying these people hold the accounts simultaneously or as many seem to think people have closed 1 account and opened another. The latter is fine at least they still can give advice. I have learned much on the boards in a few months.

You leave a fair trail if you post here a lot. The people posting here everyday might cop people in their reincarnations but a name change might keep you more anonymous to the general public.

Lads, from our perspectiive, the users with multiple usernames usually have them to cause trouble or bully or cheat in one form or another. For that reason, boards does not allow it.

Look, there's no problem if someone closes their account and reopens with a new name. It's not an issue.

However if you suspect that someone has multiple usernames please report it and we'll look into it. We have a facility which matches IP addresses and picks out multiple usernames but we don't have the time or the energy to input all of yer usernames to check them. At the end of the day this is your forum. You guys built it with posts through the years. It's in your own interest to report issues so that we can sort them out - as mods, it is not our job to police the forum - it's our job to react to posts that you guys report!

As you say Its not an issue, their new identity doesn't be long being revealed.
It is possible to send different ip addresses, so even that is not conclusive.....isn't that how some of us got on to BFF years ago....

You can redirect through a proxy server to make it look like its coming from a different IP and location.

I think it's easy enough to spot some people no matter what name they post under.
I don't want to name anybody by name but there has been a few casualties here in the last while, posters that I particularly liked to read, posters that I hope are/come back as re-regs! Still the wheel keeps turning and the void is filled.
I still think it's a great forum, with a large number of really great posters.

What would I know though, I'm only new here;)

just for a bit of clarification, I've no issue with people reregistering if they've felt that they've gotten a rough time here and want to wipe the slate clean (as I've pm'd some people welcoming them back)...
It's just that I feel there's a bit of an undercurrent going on in this forum for the past few months and I think it's a pity that a few people are harming a great resource....

I understand people wanting to take some time away, and then restart anew. So reregistering in this case.
But I don't really understand why people close one account and then almost immediately reappear with a different username...

As for the last statement above, I dunno if I'd say people are 'harming' but I would kinda agree with overall sentiment of the post.

Lads I think some of ye are reading far too much into the whole thing.

This is a place to pop in and see what's going on. Ask a question or maybe give an opinion if you think it have something useful to contribute.

I find it hard to remember what I read last night or the night before without noticing undertones or trends. If ye think someone is being a twat then report it to a mod. I have, and equally I've gotten a pm asking me to be more careful about what I'm posting. I don't take offence, I don't think twice about it.

If lads feel they want to re register then fine, they have their reasons. Even having two accounts - how would that harm the forum, although one password is enough to remember.

    Yup,

it has happend a number of times in the last while. A new thread posted. 2 or 3 regulars have replied, then someone else responds with something off the wall and is backed up by another user who has just joined up, and even in one instance a third newcomer backed it up. It's quite obvious that it's all 1 person just trying to wind it up.

Report it lads. We'll deal with it. If people want to go to the trouble of distorting the ip addresses that their pc sends then we can't do much about that, but usually the ones who have multiple usernames have them to compensate for their lack of brain cells and would not have the ability to distort their ip address!

    What he said!

Just by way of a bit of information, we forum mods can't see details like IP addresses, signup e-mails, or any other 'personal' data like that, but we DO have tools that can tell us if there are matches or even similarities in such data between any two members.
The site admins and tech people can delve much deeper, and there's a very established procedure for us to consult them if we're suspicious about anything.
They are VERY expert at winkling out devious troublemakers! :D

The general site-wide ban on multiple accounts, as explicitly stated in the site FAQ, with which I'm sure you're all very well acquainted (:D):
    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/faq.php?faq=bie_faq_im_new_here#faq_bie_faq_im_new_here_siterules
...is there mainly because a tiny, but dedicated, cohort of people appear to have made it their life's mission to make themselves a nuisance across the whole site.
The ban allows the admins to siteban them on sight, without prejudice, without having to get into convoluted rules-lawyering and arguments.

like any good commercial business the boss and bosses have to know whats going on. Anyone that thinks they are anonymous are fooling themselves. I presume even PMs can easily be seen by those above us. I would think even for the common joe soap not using computer technology that it would be very easy to pin point who a poster is if they had clocked up a fair few posts

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,570 ✭✭✭Rovi

I presume even PMs can easily be seen by those above us.

We are absolutely assured that nobody can 'browse' PM's, not even the site owners, the admins, or the tech people.
If there are sufficiently strong reasons, it is apparently technically possible for someone with the correct permissions to go into the raw data of the site database, copy out the relevant code, and render that back into legible language.
This is an enormously complicated and difficult task, to be undertaken only by a highly qualified person, and would only ever be done on foot of a court order or the like.
In short, it's far easier to just ban someone :D

Don't know Rovi, I got a two week ban (I think) back a couple of years ago. This was on Adverts.ie, which I believe is the same organisation? Any way, I bid on a cycling jacket and then PM'ed the seller to arrange payment, and management jumped on me right away for my communications. Of course I hadn't read all the rules in the forum and thought it was like ebay. So not convinced.

I was accused of being one of these people. Needless to say, nothing came of it. I haven't received anything from a mod or admin. Accusing new members of being such people for no good reason is more of a problem than this I suggest.
