    Hi

Sorry I'm not sure if this is relevant, but if you buy a car from a dealer up north with a warranty does it matter if you bring it back down south? I've an eye on a good looking Passat but the dealer is small, can't see much of a history online and only has 4/5 cars. He seems okay, but it's my first time buying so I don't want to get screwed!

    Moved out from another thread.

    Is it a manufacturer's warranty or a dealer's warranty?
A manufacturer's warranty usually is valid.
A dealer's warranty is between you and dealer and only they will honour it.

A manufacturer's warranty should be EU-wide (if that's what you're referring to - buying a relatively new car that still has some left on it) . A dealer's warranty on an older car from an NI dealer has no bearing anywhere other than with that same dealer.

Edit - Biko beat me to it :)

It totally depends on the warranty. If it is a dealer warranty then obviously only the dealer you buy it from will cover any repairs.

If it is a manufacturer's warranty then it should be covered European wide. But you need to be careful with that too as some cars came with 3 years warranty up North and only 2 years down here. The 3rd year up north was a main dealer only warranty which would not be honored.

For example UK BMWs came with 3 years warranty whereas at the time Irish BMWs only came with 2 years warranty. BMW UK and BMW Ireland are the same company so BMW dealers here covered warranty work over the 3 years. VW are different, VW UK and VW Ireland are separate entities so VW Ireland will not cover warranty work on a UK VW import outside of the initial 2 years.

Thanks all, it's just the dealers warranty so I'll have to take him on his word! Thanks biko for moving the tread, still new to this!!!

Alot of the dealers in rhe North are providing warranties through Autoguard now.

You can supposedly bring the car to any registered mechanic in the South with them.

Not sure how good or bad it is.

Just remember these 3rd party warranties are really just insurance policies. They can have stringent terms and conditions, and tend to only cover parts as a result of failure.
