Bill Gates, Myths about foreign aid

I've just read this article by Bill Gates on the main myths surrounding foreign aid.

    http://annualletter.gatesfoundation.org/?cid=bg_pfpl_po0_012103

It's very good and worth a read.

I was on the fence before about the effectiveness of foreign aid. So that coupled with the fact that most major charities are incredibly wasteful I usually avoided them completely.

I noticed a couple of issues with the article like equating GDP with quality of life and that kind of thing but overall the article has done a pretty good job of changing my mind.

Has anyone else been swayed by this article?

Are there any other major flaws in his arguments?

I'm still not convinced that we should be borrowing money to send away as foreign aid. But thats now less to do with it's effectiveness and more to do with the idea that I think it's a bit silly to borrow money to essentially give away as a gift.
