Medical expenses relief or credit

    Hi
Quick question on medical expenses. I just did my tax return for 2013 and added my health expenses. My P21 was issued The total amount at 20% came to circa 300 euro.
I see this added as a tax credit on my P21. MY tax credits increased. Therefore the total amount back is around 120 euro.
I thought you were entitled to the full figure at 20%? i.e the 300 euro
I must be wrong as revenue use it as a credit and therefore this reduces the amount you get. I thought it was a relief not a credit.
Can anyone shed some light on this?
    Thanks

20% of the gross med exps should be listed as a tax credit, along with the other typical tax credits.

Now, if you didn't pay enough tax to use up the tax credit, then it might be different.

No I paid enough tax :)

Ya I just thought I would get the full 300 in cash. If it's added as a tax credit and applied I am presuming this will mean the return is less as it just a credit?

no - it will be the same - It's a credit against your tax -- no % applied to it

Strange. Why my P21 has a new credit of 300 for health expenses and only refunede be circa 120 euro.

I centainly paid enough tax and did not underpay any.

Sounds like a fault in the system.

That would mean that you had underpaid PAYE , PRSI or USC Are you sure your tax was right all year? are all the credits you are entittled to on the P21?

Did you change jobs during the year?

Might be worth checking with your payroll people

    Ya changed jobs.

Looks like my medical insurance credit was not applied correctly since I changed and this may have reduced my credits. I will send off a medical insurance form.

Ya all paye etc was paid correctly.
