So far so good! Not liking the fact they used such crappy 80s hot hatches though to show that 80s cars are 'better' than the brand new models! Where was the 205 1.9 GTi and 16 valve Golf GTi, widely regarded as the best hot hatches of their time :(? Still, what they did to the cars is comedy gold:D!

Who the hell is the star ?

I don't watch downtown abbey but surely they could get better

Hadn't watched last series as I thought it was all about 3 middle aged men acting like pr1cks. Watching now,(thinking they have grown up) and its all about 3 middle aged men still acting like pr1cks.
    Not for me.

    Awful rubbish.
I had high hopes there'd be a decent comparison between classic '80's hot hatches and their modern counterparts.

Instead we get this awful scripted crap arsing about again. The shark has been jumped.

Very poor episode. No supercars. The last comedy element has really run it's course and is a bore at the moment.

That was quite a boring 15 minutes.

    :(

Not the best episode. They took the slapstick a little too far tonight. Although, I did belly laugh when Hamster crossed the finish line in the supermarket on his Nova's side!! That were funny.

I was also thinking that the best wishes they sent to Michael Schumacher might have been a little hard for Hammond. I'm sure it brings back memories (or an obvious lack of memories) for him.

Duplicate post. If I was buying something, I would have been charged twice!!!!

The challenges were never that bad before, were they?

Nothing good about tonights show really

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 88,972 ✭✭✭✭mike65

I liked the lateral thinking of James May in a pursuit and that Hammond rolled his car (or did he?) and the Haywayne joke from May

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,056 ✭✭✭Sparks43

Well I for one enjoyed it.Not the best I have ever seen but a great way to kick back with a beer and some pizza.

    Now roll on superbowl

It's just a sketch show at this stage really; a very poor and boring one at that. I pretty much tuned out when the comedy dynamite appeared. The phrase 'trying too hard' springs to mind here...

Laughed a bit at the supermarket destruction. The rest was pretty tedious.

Absolutely awful. Can't believe I was actually looking forward to watching it.

Going to watch next week to see the McLaren P1 and Alfa 4C, rest of the series looks rubbish.

That show stayed with me for literally seconds after it ended.

The registration on the Golf GTI looks familiar. Think I've seen it before on Top Gear.

I can't believe they dragged that awful hot hatch challenge out for an hour and didn't review a new car..I turned it off at the police chase because it was simply too boring to watch. They genuinely need to sack the writers and scrap the tedious "celebrity" interviews. I'd rather watch paint dry than have to endure tonights episode again.

I thought it was ok. At least they went so fsr to the comedy side that nobody was even pretending it was real. It was bordering on being a sketch show pisstake of itself.

Absolute nonsense! What a missed opportunity. When I heard they were reviewing classic hot hatches to their modern equivalents I was pretty excited, just the same old scripted nonsense (fake rolling and "where are my keys" particularly bad) :-( the show has stepped so far away from motoring enthusiasts to try and graphics the house wife market (who was the guest?) I would like 5th gear to take the hot hatch comparison and show these idiots how to do it!!!

To be fair it's been years since you could call Top Gear a show for motoring enthusiasts. It's a car based light entertainment family show. Not the best episode, but like the rest of ye, I'll still be watching next week.;)

Dreadful, dreadful stuff. The scripting arguments have been done to death, the recycled challenges argument has been done to death, the SIARPC arguments have been done to death...but my god, for a season opener that was scraping the barrel stuff, even by Top Gear standards. I couldn't wait for it to end :(

"the much sought after Golf GTI 8v"

    thought he knew about cars?

should have been the 16v still it looked great until they wrapped it:rolleyes:

They are a joke now to be honest! It's nothing more than lets do some entertaining than actually review anything. Says alot that I fell asleep during the interview with the guest!

Jesus for my future viewing of Top Gear it will be recorded so I can fast forward ,the effort in the making of the show was minimal and evident . Complete and utter ****e with no redeeming qualities what soever. Clarkson was always a Langer but at least he had an opinion and last night had nothing. Back of a fag box production .....

I am a huge fan of the series. Have watched every episode a number of times.

I am however finding it harder and harder to enjoy. I think the problem is that I am no longer the target audience, it is not a car show anymore, it is a family entertainment sjow. The show was always funny and scripted to a degree but there was a lot of factual stuff in there too. The challenges were also much more realistic.

Older seasons would have done a proper test and comparison of the hot hatches while still keeping it funny and entertaining. Now its just aimed at kids as a family show. The dynamite and the drone being two examples.

Would love to see them get back to more serious stuff, and I am not talking about comparing thread wear or fuel economy stuff. The presenters, James and Jeremy mostly can both do serious shows and keep you entertained. Clarksons show on the artic convoys recently was brilliant as was Mays mechano tt bike.

I will keep watchin but I have started to prefer the new seasons of Fifth gear.

I think a clue to one potential problem is in this thread title: 'season 21'. I doubt there are many shows out there that could last 21 seasons without eventually running out of ideas & steam.

I'll give next week a look in, just in case it was first episode gitters, but otherwise I think it's time to stop watching tbh...

    .

It should be that bit easier being a car show as cars are forever updating. There wasn't a single segment reviewing even a supercar last night.

Was Clarkson almost crying when he was talking about Schumacher?

exactly you can't have an item on classic hot hatches without including the legendary peugeot 205

Just catching up on it here now.. not great at all. Hammond has gotten very old looking!

I agree 100%. Clarksons documentary on the convoys shows he can make good shows.

The 'police' chase stuff was real lowest common denominator TV which wasn't cheap to make I'd guess. It reminded me of some of their non-TV DVDs. The shop race was a bit better. The show needed a decent car review to break up the 'challenges'.

I'll keep watching in the hope it improves a bit.

FYI, if you move to a 'smart' meter electricity plan, you CAN'T move back to a non-smart plan.

You don't have to take a 'smart' meter if you don't want one, opt-out is available.

Buy drinks in 3L or bigger plastic bottles or glass bottles or cartons to avoid the DRS fee.

This. Why did they only spend 700 pounds? Were was the money limit and the use of money for tweaking their cars? Were was the wrangling over what to buy, pointing out the flaws when driving which was classical (and funny) part of the previous comparisons of used cars? Were was the need to sell it on/get it judged by a third party (art exhibition, calendars, selling the car afterwards, handbreak turns infront of teenage girls etc.)? Instead we got 15 min of faked police chasing which added nothing to the show and 5 min of wrapping which added nothing except boredom.

I'll finish the season but this was a really weak start to it all.

There was a point in time where I was disappointed with the comedy elements in the show and the lack of car focused segments but eventually got over that. The opening show of the new season was just awful though. There was no proper news, no reviews, no analysis... nothing. Just an extended comedy segment.

I think it could qualify for the worst 'new look' Top Gear show I've seen yet.

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

Shocked it was boring beyond belief. I don't think I have seen the previous series yet but after watching this, I don't think I'll bother.
