    hi all,

I purchased a car and have received the log book. However there is no PIN number with the log book in order to tax the car. Is this normal? Do they 'force' new owners to call into the tax office in person?

    thanks

Any tax pin that I got was a letter separate to the logbook that pops up a few weeks before the tax runs out each tax period.

Can't you retrieve the online now, or is there security questions? I can't remember exactly...

I phoned the motor tax office before and they gave me the pin over the phone...

The security question is the address your car is registered to. I've used it to tax my new car twice now, around 5 days after the logbook was sent.

I always thought you had to attend tax office to tax a car for the first time as the new owner? The tax renewal pin that is sent out to you is after they have your details and the cars details together on their database???

I was able to get my pin online and tax it about 5 days before i got the log book

    Is the car currently taxed?

car's tax has been out since september. message on motortax.ie says that 'due to tax out more than 3 months, please contact motor office in person'.

now the question i have, is why does this appy to me? I only purchased the car last week

I have never attended the tax office to tax a car but I have rang them to tax it initially.

If its not currently taxed, you need to wait until the logbook comes back. Then, when it does, send off the RF100A form to the tax office. Bobs your anuty and it will appear in your lovely postbox!

Fill on your details via the pin retrieval section and then you will get a pin and you can tax it, worked for me when I bought my last car.

If you have the log book then the pin is the last 6 digits of the VIN

Only on the first taxing after registration/import.

If pin retrieval doesn't work, claiming the tax is out of date for three months, then the change of ownership as not been processed yet.

You should have a good look at the new regulations in case you come unstuck.
Was the car declared off the road by thecprevious owner? If so that declaration becomes void on sale and you are then left with ten days to either tax it or declare it off the road.
