My nct is out since August 2013. I was away and couldn't make the initial appointment. I have made an appointment but it's not until march,it's taxed and insured can I stil drive it around while waiting for the nct test or do I have to wait for it?

Technically you can be done for driving without a valid NCT disc. If you can show the booking then you are usually okay if stopped, but there are no guarantees.

Surely you can get an earlier appointment than that? If my NCT was that out of date then Id be on the phone every day looking about cancellations.

you phone them and you get an appointment within days. You can't drive it at all with no NCT, except to the test

Print off the confirmation and keep it in the glove box. Thats what I did myself. The argument, to any reasonable Garda, is that you have made all reasonable effort to attain the disc by booking. The proof of which is your book receipt. A Garda would know that a judge would see that and quickly strike the case out. Becomes a little more complicated if you are obviously taking the mick i.e. No NCT and No Tax etc.

If you are worried, book and then try get a cancellation.

If it was a matter of weeks then probably, but I don't think that's going to cover 5 months.

Thanks everyone for your advice,ye I think it's better to keep it off the road until I get a cancellation,I know they are cracking down on all nct related issues so probably be the best. I rang there and they have me on the list for cancellations

FYI, my NCT is out at the end of this month. The 1st available appointment (any day, any time) in Galway is Tuesday March 25th a 7:15 am - bit of a joke....

**Actually just checked again (for 2nd car) and the only dates available for the rest of the year are march 25th through 29th (inclusive). So out of 365 days the NCT is offering it's customers a total choice of 5 days......granted more will be added at some point, but it's hardly customer friendly...

Refer them to their website which states something along the lines of "nct in 30days" or free. Got me one in 3 days!

Bought a car in January, was on the road until April until the NCT (The earliest available date) and never had an issue myself. The NCT before I bought the car was a year expired. All comes down to the Garda but having made all reasonable effort to get an NCT, I'd be happy to take my chances in front of judge as there is no viable alternative i.e. Its not reasonable to ask someone not to drive because a third party company cannot keep supply and demand balanced. Thats provided of course my tax and insurance affairs were in order.

Granted I accept your point if your NCT expired in January and you were stopped in July, your probably going to have problems. But I never understood why people don't just book a date online as soon as it expires, its free to do so as you can 'Pay At Centre'

Or before - you can do the test up to three months early, which saves a lot of stress.

    Hey,

I booked my NCT yesterday after a few days of checking on the site. The first time I went to book, there were no appointments till March. I checked the next day, then there were slots in a few places for mid to end of feb. Checked again yesterday and got a booking for early feb.

It seems they release cancellations / re-scheduled appointments every so often so keep checking the site!!

    Go team!
