Adventure race in the middle of Marathon Training

Just looking for some opinions from you guys.

I am a beginner runner, trying to build up to my first marathon in Dublin at the end of October. I intend to do the Hal Higdon plan, so will be following his training plan for the four months leading up to the marathon.

I just noticed the Tough Mudder adventure race is in Ireland this year, on October 4th. I really would like to do it, but do you think it is good to be doing a race like that in the middle of marathon training, or will it not really matter?

How important is the marathon to your plans?

There is always a risk in doing other events in the lead to your A race. If you injure yourself doing the Tough Mudder will you be jeopardising your marathon at the end of the month? Quite likely.

Timing wise you will be in a peak week of training for the marathon just before tapering so not the best idea to try a race like that as well as a high load training week.

Having done these types of races in the UK before a couple of times, I know how much it can take out of you and how long the bumps / bruises / niggles take to heal, so I'd probably steer clear as it's just a little over 3 weeks out from the DCM. Much higher chance of getting injured during these races too, which would make the 4 months + training for a marathon a complete waste of time. Will be aiming to do Gael Force West myself. That's mid-August and I was still in two minds as to whether that was too close or not. Come October I'll be wrapping myself in cotton wool for the big day!

The marathon is absolute priority, its the one I have been building towards.

I suppose I thought that the adventure race could take the place of the training I would be likely be doing that particular day anyway, but its not really the same type of running is it? I guess its the risk of injury that I really need to be thinking about.

The tough in tough mudder might be a bit overstated. They have about 5 water stops in a 10k race...must be in case any of the toughies get very thirsty :D

The problem with tough mudder is the chance of sprains and bangs rather than the effort. It's a risk with any of those obstacle races.

Don't do it so. Do Runamuck in a few weeks instead. I did a few one day races in the lead up to a marathon and the big problem was the recovery from the race induced soreness which impacted on marathon training. In fairness the few after race pints delayed recovery too..

Tough Mudder could take 5 days away from your training, not just one.

In my very amateur opinion, I think you're too near the big day. Under normal circumstances and from talking to others, this event could replace a (serious!) training day and it would be good for the mind + soul to mix it up too. Just the chances of an injury, it's just too near. Had it been the beginning of September, it could be ideal for you.

This is serious planning you're doing 9 months in advance!
