i get mixed messages about what is the right engine oil, some say 5w30, others 5w40... just wondering does anyone with experience of running one of these cars have any recommendations off the proper oils...

    You need vw spec 507 00 or 505 01

Is not the 5/30 or 5/40 that matters. You need to look for the vw spec.
Being a pd engine, I'm pretty sure you should be getting oil with vw 505.01 and not 505.00.

A lot of them require a low-sulphated-ash brew, on account of the DPF. Have a look here: Castrol oil finder

I have one (02 B5.5)and did my first service over the Christmas after purchasing back in June. My first car and learned a lot about it by doing the service myself with help and advice from someone in the know.

Used this oil(505.01), most decent parts shops should have something similar, don't skimp on the oil! Be very careful when filling and do not over or under fill it(Ensure you are getting the right reading with the dipstick ie)Car is level, give time for the oil to to drop down through the engine). When changing the oil you should also do the oil & air & cabin filters. Diesel Filter too if you are able but this is a bit more difficult so be prepared or get a mechanic to do it.

You should be looking at doing an oil change every *edit*10k*/edit* depending on the driving you do. A good piece of advice I got with mine is to always look after the turbo. Let it cool down after a long trip. If you are doing short journeys in it like driving to work all week and the engine is not getting up to temperature you need to give it a blow out every week. Reason being that gunk will build up in the exhaust system and will only get cleared by getting the engine temperature up and letting enough air get through the system.(A 30 min blowout up a motorway is ideal) Doing this will ensure the emissions are kept down.

My mistake :o! 10-15k. Had just glanced at the oil spec. If you go by the service indicator in the car, it is 15k km.

    I have a 2001 passat, comfortline S TDI 5 130 1.9 saloon. Has this car a PD engine?

    Yes it would have.

Very important point, make sure you never use the 505.00 stuff in a PD TDI. Using the old spec causes issues with wear in the engine as the car gets older and is one of the reasons I didn't go for a PD as my first car and went for a VE.

For anyone buying one, the advice I have gotten regularly is look for a well serviced car and call the most common garage that pops up in the service booklet and ask what they would use. Not a 100% check but some peace of mind.

I also read, and since forgotten, that you should watch out for the wording of the spec listing on the bottle. Something like "505.00 recommended" doesn't mean VW certified, perhaps someone here knows the specifics.
