just a quick question, I have a Thomson router (not sure when I got it) and recently upgraded to 200mb. not getting anything near those speeds over wireless (and not great for range either) and wondering if the latest UPC Router is any better?

Whats the newest router that UPC are giving out, is it any better than what I have?

The current modem UPC are issuing is the Technicolor TC7200. As you'll see from other posts most are far from happy with it (very poor wifi, no bridge mode, etc). So if you have the Thompson TWG 870 then hold on to it. It should work fine with the 200Mb connection wired direct or by using the powerline adapter kits

great thanks. Exactly the sort of info I need.

Is there a powered line product that all boardsies are using?

Powerline won't get past 90Mbp's direct transfer. The top end advertised 500Mbp's is the theoretical switching speed.

    Wireless AC performs much better.

so can anyone recommend a product that will help me out?

I can run an ethernet cable away from the router to another router/access point thats more central for the rest of the house?

    Hi Cuddlesworth

Which powerline adapters have you tried?

I have the TP link Gigabit 500mbps and I don't get any more then 90mbps down on a 200mbs package

At the moment I never get more then 38-39 mbps per second wireless from the Thomson TWG router on any wireless device

I run TPlink and Devolo 200's and Devolo 500's at home. I was looking for one that does vlan tagging but I've yet to find one.

OP, if you want a full and stable 200 megs plug an ethernet cable in.

If you want 200Mb's on a laptop etc, you need a good router that has the wireless AC standard and a Laptop/Tablet etc that also does the AC stadard(most don't). I use a Asus RT-AC66U at home with very good results. There are caveats with wireless, distance, different standards, downgrading, shared connection etc...

I also have a Wireless N access point at the rear of my apartment connected via powerline that gets around 50 meg.

exact same problem. Its obviously the router, UPC said its my laptop/tablet, but I was surprised at that. whats the point in selling 200mb broadband if its only pushing out 40mb wirelessly?

I will use ethernet for download from now on, but would a different router give me better speeds/range? I have something like this in mind.

That is a good question. Realistically, they provide you with a Gigabit port so you have the capability of receiving those speeds.

Although Ireland seems to have a tradition of handing out the cheapest equipment for their premium packages.

Yes I've tried a speedtest on both my nexus 4 and my wifes asus t-100 and on average I get 18-20mbps but max is 38-39. I was having serious issues too with remote play for ps4 but I resolved that by switching to 40mhz mode and using a higher channel then any of my neighbours.

You tube also refuses to play HD video on wirless or wired constant buffering which wasnt a problems last week? UPC really starting to annoy me now which is a shame but I have had years of good service, but since I switched to 200meg broadband its being downhill for me

In perfect 5GHZ 802.11N300 you'll get about 65Mbs, about 60 from 2.4Ghz. Unless you upgrade to .11AC you wont see much more than 50 at any point when in real world usage.

I had this with both sky go and youtube. I am using a brand new Nexus 7. Like how can youtube be buffering with 200mb broadband!

Youtube is something different the issues with Wireless speed because I've had that recently as well. I can RDP into my lab and buffer perfectly on the 20meg BT line there but it struggles at home at 120meg. I'm going to assume its congestion from UPC to the backbone that carries Youtubes traffic, since my actual speed can easily ramp to 120 at most times.

Actually come to think of it sky go was constantly buffering on my xbox yesterday and that was hard wired? looks like another call to UPC is on the horizon  excuse the pun

Both Thomson and Technicolor can be set to bridge mode. I'd recommend doing this if you are using your own router

Like it was said if you want speeds 50+ you will want wireless AC. I got the Asus AC66U and its a beast but expensive.
