Root Canal pain - Day 4

I had a root canal on a lower molar on Thursday.. My Dentist took lots of XRays and said she was very happy with the outcome but I'm still in pain.

I got a nightguard yesterday because I clench my jaws in my sleep and the impact of the top teeth hitting it was excruciating.. I thought the pain might ease if the tooth was left in peace for the night but no such luck.. still sore.

    Should I be worried? :(

    Thanks

How are you getting on now xzanti ?

Just had my first root canal today, and so good so far. Just a slight throbbing in the tooth, but no pain.

Hi Fiacha, the pain in my tooth isn't so bad now.. it's still a little tender.. but my jaw is killing me where I got the injection.

I'm not sure if this is normal? But I'm 8 days post procedure now and it's still waking me up during the night.. I seem to do nothing only pop pills these days..

I hope you're doing ok Fiacha.. everyone is different.

did you have the root canal filling completed?

    could be a few things...
filling could be high, taking more pressure than the rest of the teeth every time you eat, irritating the ligament that holds it in. like hitting your thumb with a hammer, it won't settle until you stop

tooth may be cracked, especially if you have a history of clenching

    infection hasn't cleared up

whatever it is, it shouldn't be waking you up 8 days later. go back to your dentist.

Thats bad luck. I would give my dentist a ring if I was still in pain after 8 days.

I haven't had a bit of bother with mine. Hopefully the infection will clear up and I'll be able to get the permanent filling in a few weeks.

Yeah, She finished the root canal, I have a temporary filling and I'm getting a crown in a few weeks

The tooth itself has settled nicely thankfully, but the pain I'm referring to is in my jaw.. I think it's from where the needle went in.. possibly into a muscle or something? Having said that.. it feels a lot better today :)

As it happens, a friend of mine had one done on her top molar a week before mine and so we were exchanging updates.. hers seemed to stay sore for a good long while too.. maybe it depends on the size of the tooth that gets canalled? I don't know..

Each case is slightly different , majority doesnt get any post op pain, a minority does get it and it can be due to several variables too numerous to mention, ur clenching habit and mouthguard does indicate a few things , have u reported to ur dentist yet?

Just been to my dentist, my molars on the rt side have been very sensitive to cold. He reckons that the nerve is inflamed from a previous filling on that tooth. He suggests that I go to an endodontist to have a root canal done. Any advice, recommendations?

did your dentist not recommend one?

    @xzanti - has everything settled?

Yes but what do you recommend ballsy??

hmm thinking that sens to cold isn't usually a sign of irreversible pulpitis. the last sign of a dying nerve is sens to heat and relief by cold, apart from full blown pain!

so is it possible that I don't need root canal?

impossible to say without seeing the actual tooth. sorry. i'd go with what your dentist advised though. anything here is just guessing.

I know I am probably clutching at straws, but I have had swollen & sore glands in my neck for a couple of weeks, could this have inflamed the nerve in the tooth, and once the glands are sorted that the tooth sensitivity will settle as well?

It is normally the other way round, something else is causing the glands to swell , not the glands causing the problem in the tooth/nerve ,suggest you see dentist or doctor ASAP
