Rennick the Caddy - friend or foe

Just reading about McIlroy and the two shot penalty for an incorrect drop that was pointed out by a playing partners caddy Dave Rennick. I know the Caddy was right but I wonder how it will be seen by other caddies and players. I sense that some might feel he should not have said anything! Don't jump down my throat everyone I'm only throwing it out there. Maybe it reflects poorly on Mcilroys caddy who was closer than him!

Why does mcilroys caddy get the flack for all things stupid Rory does and of course the other caddy was right to highlight it.

If he said nothing and Rory signed his card wouldn't he be disqualified for signing the wrong score if it was noticed later on?

It was a basic mistake from him and nobody is to blame but Rory!

The decent thing would have been to point it out at the time, giving McIlroy the chance to re-drop. He didn't have to, but you can be sure it will be remembered.

I think in fairness he was going to but Rory was about to hit the ball when he noticed it and it was too late, he didn't want to put him off his round so he left it to the 18th when they putted out! I guess he probaly done the sponsors a favour as the tournament with a disqualified mcilroy would have been less of an attraction!

Some blame to Fitzgerald for not looking out for his player but of course it was McIlroy's responsibility.
If it was spotted after he signed, he would have been disqualified but unless there were pictures, it's unlikely it would have picked up. If the caddy had waited until McIlroy had signed the card before raising it, I wouldn't fancy his career prospects.

I didn't see it, so can't comment on that. Give him the benefit of the doubt I guess.

Rory broke the rules by being silly and people expect the guy who copped it to turn a blind eye???

    Seriously????

Think he's after losing the tournament by a shot, that will hurt! I actually do think his caddy bears some responsibility, he's well paid by McIlroy and should be watching every shot, the other caddy spotted it from a farther distance away. It was a drop and should have came in for extra attention!

I don't think that's what people are suggesting, I think some feel he should have said it to McIlroy before he hit the shot in question. He says there wasn't time - guess we'll never know if that's true or if there's more to his motivation.

Nobody to blame but Rory anyway, player is ultimately responsible for his actions. He was quoted yesterday as saying something along the lines of "he's got better things to be doing than worrying about changes to the rules" or words to that effect. If that is accurate then its a very unprofessional attitude IMO.

As Denis Pugh said on Sky last night, "its not a stupid rule, its a rule"

It was suggested in the OP that he had a feeling some might think he should have said nothing

If Rennick was close enough to see it he was close enough to say something, it like moving your marker on the green forgetting to put it back and you opponent claims the hole within the rules but bad sportsmanship.

I didn't see it but perhaps the other caddy was reluctant to call it at the time as the rule was broken when Rory was taking his stance to hit his shot and it would only be evident as he was well into his pre shot routine and a call out at that time might have been seen as an attempt at gamesmanship?

He would have been entitled to re drop it again if the white line interfered with his stance which it actually did!
