Loft conversion in traditional old cottage

(sorry if this is duplicated but I can't find where I posted it !?)

We have a trad' old cottage and are considering converting the loft by putting in a dormer. Has anyone had experience of this kind of conversion in an old cottage? If so, we are just wondering if there were any 'issues' that cropped up that would be valuable for us to know about ? Any general input would be really interesting to hear as regards the costs and how the conversion went generally ? Also, things like did it increase the value of your house sufficiently to justify the expense of the conversion ?

    Thanks for any input/advice.
