Hi. I'm wondering what the cost of taxing an evo X in Ireland costs. Also if I import a 2009 model from Japan will I be taxed on the old CC based system or on the new co2 emissions system. If it's on the latter then how do they go about putting the car into a tax bracket. Need definite info on this as I'm either getting an evo 9 mr or a X. The 9 would be on the old system I presume as it's a 2006 fresh import

You'll have to find a pre June 2008 one, bout 700 tax based on engine size, n bout 2 grand based on emissions

Actually you'll have to go for a 2007 or older registered model to escape the cc based tax system.

Nope, you can infact get a evo x registered in early 08 taxable under the old system

Not if you're importing one however as OP has said they will be doing.

    Not true.

Any import first registered before June 1st 2008 will be put on the cheaper of either the CC or CO2 based tax systems.

It goes on the date of first registration, same as irish cars

    Yeah, that's what I said.

Yep, 2350 on Emissions system Vs 710 on the CC system.

I've looked into it before, makes sense to import early 2008 one

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,617 ✭✭✭ba_barabus

I'll have to look it up. I understood that the option was only given to people who registered their car before June 1st 2008 and if you imported an 08 reg car you'd automatically be put on the emissions system.

    Apologies if I'm wrong.

I used think this too but it seems it was only an option for new cars in 2008. It does not apply to any car anymore.

Was told 2 weeks ago by the tax office that this is the case.

  • Hosted Moderators Posts: 9,980 ✭✭✭mik_da_man

Yeah, when I inquired a few months ago I was told that it would be put on the cheaper option.

    Here ya go:

    http://www.environ.ie/en/LocalGovernment/MotorTax/
    Cars Registered Outside of Ireland
A private car first registered abroad prior to 1 January 2008 will always be taxed on engine size (c.c.). The CO2 based motor tax system does not apply to second-hand imports that were registered abroad prior to 2008.
A private car first registered abroad between 1 January 2008 and 30 June 2008 inclusive and subsequently registered in Ireland will be taxed on whichever is the lesser of the motor tax rates based on engine size (c.c.) or CO2 emissions. The comparison is based on the motor tax rates as of 1 December 2011.
A private car first registered abroad after 1 July 2008 and subsequently registered in Ireland will be taxed on CO2 emissions.

Thanks for the replies everyone. So the task is now to find and import a pre june 2008 evo 10 to avoid the high tax on emissions.

I hate the new tax system...it made crappy diesel family cars ridiculously cheap and anything remotely interesting unaffordable. How can they possibly justify having the tax on and evo x three times more expensive ffs...

luckily with the UK's half year plates finding one with 08 in the middle of the plate (not 58) is a good hint that it will fit the bill.

Start a new thread about high mpg and low tax I'd say. It has no place in this thread.

I'd assume poor maintenance/dogging it before assuming the engine was ****.

Why is there always someone in this country nearby ready to pounce on an interesting car discussion with "Shure she's no Golf..."
Ya, thank f**k she's no Golf!

Meister, you had me converted to the fact that the depreciation levels and high tax rates more or less even themselves out. But the other night a guy attempted to debunk all of that by showing the same, large-engine cars in the UK are no dearer than here.

I don't know what to believe now

    Depends on the car tbh.

For instance LS2 6 litre Vauxhall monaros are holding pretty firm on price in the UK ATM.

A lot of it is down to perceived badge value/rarity as well as tax/fuel costs

So as the OPs question has been answered all I can say is fair play, make sure you update us on your status if you decide to import.
