Hi All,
I placed a ad on carzone.ie selling my alfa romeo mito and just got a text from someone called janicefaye with a address of ja***12@o**look.com looking for me to email more information.

Seems like a scam to me as i read something along the same lines a few months back. just a heads up in case any one else gets it.

Cheers
Darren

Maybe they just want you to email more info if something wasn't mentioned in advert.

I had a similar situation when buying sent email/text/calls yo a guy selling s grey St who didn't reply and number was out of use.

Bad advert 1/2 vague pictures and very little info/no reg etc

You can't say at this early stage it's a scam. Was the requested info in the ad already?

• Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 81,220 ✭✭✭✭biko

What info did they want you to email?
Just because someone asks for more info doesn't make them a scammer.

I've obfuscated the mail in case it a real buyer that just want info.

That does seem very odd, and they're probably not legit. But what's the scam? I don't get it. They can't do anything with your paypal address except give you money.

Send a fake receipt for PayPal, they will include extra for shipping and ask you to go to a fake website and pay the shipping.

It's the usual scam.

What receipt for paypal?, money transferred to a paypal account goes straight into the account, you don't get a receipt?

From Yahoo Answers, describes it better than I could:

"There are plenty of scams using Paypal's name
1 - they send you an email saying money has been sent but due to new security measures it will not be credited until you send the tracking info. So you send the item, email the tracking info, then check Paypal and there is NO money in your account. You call Paypal who tells you they never emailed you, there was no transaction and they NEVER ask for tracking info before crediting your account
2 - they send you money from a hacked Paypal account, you ship the item, then the real account holder discovers the theft, reports it to Paypal and the money is refunded from your account
3 - they send you a fake Paypal email saying money has been sent but you have to click on a link to verify the transaction - which leads you to a fake but real looking Paypal log-in page that you log into -- and you just got your account hacked
4 - they send you money from a real Paypal account, ask you to ship to a certain address, then file a chargeback. If you did not check with Paypal that the address they gave you was the "verified" address and you sent anywhere but the verified address, they claim they never received the item and Paypal refunds them. It doesn't matter if you have proof it was delivered to the other address along with an email from the buyer telling you to ship to that address. If you ship anywhere but the verified Paypal mailing address, you have NO protection and Paypal will always side with the buyer "

that's the scam...it's a fake message saying non-existant money is in your account. They will have sent too much and ask for a refund of the balance. They hope you wont check

Just had Mr Chris.David text me. Ditto on the scammers.
Also had a Kim "Hi, Ms Kim. Will like to know if your Motor on Donedeal is still for sale? If Yes! Reply her back to ( lovendcare789@gmail.com) Thanks"
Who's now just emailed saying she's a marine engineer at sea and will buy my 20k car without ever seeing it.
Sheesh.

I have mine up and got an email. English was OK, not perfect so emailed on some more info even though it was all in the add. Two emails later he's buying the car, wants to collect on Friday and wants and emailed copy of the logbook.

I replied asked him how he was paying and to send his number to call him. An hour later I get a call from a UK number and he's requesting the log book to verify I am the owner of the car as he needed to check with the Gardai.

Told him to do the checks on cartell etc, logbook was here in my name, be delighted to drive to local cop shop with him and log book, then bank to lodge money then back to cop shop if it he still needed reassurance. He got snotty so told him I wasn't interested.

Any idea what this is? Seems really odd to me but maybe I'm missing so something??

Its just a scam. Nothing more. Anyone with an iota of sense would know the Gardai can't do anything with the log book anyway, so its not a genuine query on their behalf. But with a scan of a log book its far easier to produce a forgery as you can match details, VIN's etc. Makes it more legit to an unsuspecting buyer or cursory look over.

Thats what I suspected, particularly since the crackdown on the Gardai using pulse to get info etc without a vaild reason.

These Marine Engineers buy alot of stuff when they're out at sea. It's a popular one for bikes too.
