NCT results -comparing figures, inconsistencies

Just put my car through the NCT, it passed no bother thankfully. Sitting here with the previous results and today's results, just comparing figures, and I'm wondering how accurate the NCT measurements can be because the figures (aside from the suspension Mm figures) show no pattern i.e. no trend.

The car is 8 years old, so I have today's results and two sets of previous figures.

The smoke test figure are completely off, but could be partially explained by the trip to the NCT centre each time. 3.00/m or higher is a fail for the smoke test.

    2010 figure was 0.060/m
2012 figure was 2.910/m (this was almost a fail, I remember I crawled to the centre in bad traffic that day)
    2014 figure was 0.710/m

It just seems that there's no pattern to the figures, I've had no exhaust/cat work done in any of that time. The fact that in 2012 the traffic was bad on the way to the centre might explain it, but would it account for a swing of that scale???

It's similar with the suspension imbalance figures - I've had no suspension components replaced, no new shocks - yet the imbalance figures are now lower than they were 4 years ago!!!

Am I missing something? The only figures that seem to show a pattern are the suspension Mm figures, which have shown an increase each time.

The brake test figure differences I can understand, as I've had pads done at different stages over the past few years.

Were the test done at different weather conditions?

A friend of mine had a car fail the NCT three time on emissions, when his own reader was reading perfect.

Went back to the centre and asked them to try the other lane, and after much bickering they did, and it passed. Go figure.

The weather wasn't extreme for any of the tests from what I remember, so I don't think it would have had any impact on the test.

Well that's just another example - if there's inconsistencies on the day between the equipment on different lanes, how can the results across years and different centres be consistent?

I just wonder if it's all a game of pot luck really.

In my personal opinion it can be at times, yes.
