    Are the gates very heavy?

The Good news is you've done the right thing in seeking advice first before jumping in.
As has been said the first place to start is with the size and weight of the Gates.
Are they for an Urban House Driveway or a Large House with big Gates.?
When you have that information we'll be able to help further.
However as a general rule it's always better to have the Gate hung First on Steel Carriers and then Build the piers around them. Depending on size and weight the Steel Carriers can be bolted to or buried in the Ground.
Tell whoever is making the Gates that you want extended Hangers to suit whatever size piers you intend to build . 22 inch piers are quite common
    As it avoids cutting Bricks.
