Hi guys, hoping someone can help please. I'm after buying an old house ( built in 1950's) and I am opening up the fireplace on it to put in a freestanding stove. There was an old range in it when I bought it and whoever had it had blocked up the fireplace for the range. I have just opened it up and there is one of the old style fireplaces in it, only problem is there is an awful amount of soot in it. I am hoping to put in a freestanding stove and fit it under the fireplace but was just looking for a bit of advice on how to cover up the soot so it won't smell and come out through plaster or paint. I have scrapped of as much soot as I can but the blocks are still very black. Any advice would be greatly appreciated please :) I have posted up a photo of what I want to do with my stove

Could you put up a picture of your chimney?

    Hi
Could you put of photo as how it looks sfter you opened it up. There's more thansoot there I think, it is more than likely cresote from burning coal turf or wet timber blocks over the years, If so you will need to clean it back totally because when new stove and heat gets at it, it will soften and drip. that's why I asked to put up photo.
