    eggs

If eggs were a cereal, I'd say 'eggs'.

Oats with milk is your best bet if it's cereal you want.

special k has 7g of protein. but i wouldn't ever feel right recommending some one actually eat it.

50g of porridge has 5.6g. 100ml of milk will have 3-4g. Throw in some flaked almonds and you're hitting 10g plus.

or one and a half eggs.

    eggs>cereal not just for protein

    What are the serving sizes?

    (I can't open the link)

It'd be interesting to see the sugar content.

    guessing its standard 30g

    http://www.specialk.com/en_us/products/cold-cereals/original.html

    23g carb, 4g sugar

Thats the American site tho. Same as the list is mostly american sold cereals.

Is there a specific reason you're looking for high protein cereal? Are you trying for more protein in your diet in general?

Generally, most cereals don't contain a "lot" of protein - there are some products like this that have a reasonable amount, even still not a whole lot more than your average cereal.

What I do is add a scoop of protein powder to porridge and mix it up - tastes really nice and adds ~20 gms of protein to a bowl.

Edit: Actually once I tried making a protein shake with milk and using that over cereal, was ok but not great.

    ya
    just wondered
I already eat boiled eggs for breakfast

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,707 ✭✭✭MikeC101

You'd probably get more bang for your buck just eating a bit more protein during the day so - can of tuna, extra chicken breast at lunch kind of thing, or if you couldn't do that, could always add a protein shake with whatever you'd eat in the morning anyway?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,869 ✭✭✭thegreatiam

eggs would be the better option. especially if you want to up the protein.

cereals are generally crammed with other things and eating wheat, corn and other cereal can have other health negatives.

Like their adds say, they can make up part of a healthy breakfast*

as in, if you eat a healthy breakfast you could also have 30g of cereal.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,890 ✭✭✭tomdempsey200

    ok people
I may just forget the idea
I'm already onto tuna and shakes etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,480 ✭✭✭Chancer3001

Put a mix of all your favourite cereals in a bowl.

Then throw the bowl in the bin and eat eggs.

    Hope that helps.

ok.. like I said I already eat eggs anyhow

looks like cereals are bad nutritionally judging by the feedback

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,869 ✭✭✭thegreatiam

add more eggs, then add meat, beans, dairy, fish and nuts, not just for breakfast but across your whole diet.

unless you are huge and need like 400g of protein or completely broke and cannot buy food then you don't need shakes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,890 ✭✭✭tomdempsey200

    what sort of beans?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,869 ✭✭✭thegreatiam

    magic ones.

any beans, all bean have protein in them, same as seeds and nuts.

a shake is protein, its just a food supplement.

all it really is is dried milk. its not anything special or necessary.

Just get your protein from food and forget the shakes

Sorry now people but some of the replys here are not at all welcoming :/

The guy asked about cereal...therefore the post outlining the protien content of cereals was efficent enough

No need to keep banging on about eggs,

OP personally for breakfast I have

60g oatbran with 10g cocoa powder 200ml low fat milk 100ml water and 2 sachets stevia

    1 ON gold standard shake

    100g strawberries

Usually a square of dark chocolate too

Theres about 35-40g protien there....plenty to start your day

Forget everyone rabbiting on about eggs.... If you want a grain based breakfast Id suggest oatbran...great stuff

Why not bake bread and have two slices of bread with a slice of ham between them for breakfast. Plenty of protein in that :-)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 857 ✭✭✭rozeboosje

If you bake your own bread you can use strong flour (12.8 % protein in something good like some of the Organic strong flours you can buy), make them high fibre using wholemeal rye, too, and use nothing but water and salt and a sourdough yeast starter so there is no unnecessary fat in there. Better than any "cereal" out of a box, and as grains are cereals I think suggesting slices of good quality bread is perfectly appropriate here. You can use lean meat between them too. If ham doesn't sound lean enough, try sliced turkey.

    Or eggs, of course.

banging on about eggs is the same as banging on about cocoa powder, low fat milk, stevia, ON gold standard shake and strawberries

what youve done there is read between the line of his question and realised that he is not asking about cereal but how can he improve his breakfast and also get more protein in his whole diet so...eggs.

also we are not a service, we don't provide answers thats what google is for. If i think some needs more eggs then ill tell them so, even if they didnt ask, and you also need more eggs, lol stevia and protein powder for breakfast. I dont even eat breakfast and i know that's crap.

OP where possible get your protein from food, ON powder or any protein powder is there as a supplement not a staple.

make sure the majority of protein comes from food, youll be able to control your diet better and it wont be such a hardship to endure. sure if you struggle to get those last 30 or 50 grams top it off with a shake, but it shouldnt be the first thing you turn to.

    Also OP, when you said:
when I said shakes I prob meant smoothies..I wasn't on about powdered shakes

a smoothie is literally anything blended into a drinkable liquid. Youll have to define what your putting into it to know who it goes into your diet.

from my research today i'm prob going with cocoa powder, almonds ,milk, banana ,peanut butter:)

this is for after workouts btw ...i do training most days

i already googled most of the info but there's a lot of random stuff out there:)

probably cocoa powder, almonds ,milk, banana ,peanut butter

i already googled most of the info but there's a lot of random stuff out there

plenty of good stuff to if you look for it.

what ever you put in your smoothie make sure to include it in your totals for the day.

smoothies, while nice and easy way of getting calories, dont replace food, so if your cutting weight youll still feel hungry after, sometime its best to eat the stuff instead.

if your bulking they are a good way to get a load of calories without pukeing

peanut butter, banana and milk is tasty on it's own. additively so. I add jam or lemon curd. cocoa powder is nice there too.

If for what ever reason I haven#t made my protein totals or i don't have time thats usually where my protein powder goes. seeds are a good addition to most smoothies if you need the fats/protein or nutrition form them, they can be tricky to add into a regular diet elsewhere.
also adding spinach is a good way to get more veg as it doesnt really taste of anything when you put it in a smoothie.

spinach, almonds, banana, milk, honey for flavour. etc.

before or after workouts doest really matter, its the food you eat over the whole day that make the difference.
and dont forget rest is where the real changes happen. make sure your resting.

Theres nothing wrong with taking shakes to supplement food where needed, I just spent the last month off of shakes...so i was eating 200g protien a day from whole foods...more hassle that it is worth

I dont eat eggs..only the whites...yolks are like biting into farts imo..and im not into spending time cracking and separating eggs every morning...i do that on the weekends when im not commuting 200km each day to college..even then its only for a change of breakfast nothing more..

no one really disputes that. But it is better to get most of your protein from food. even if it is to make the whole diet easier.

problems come when people dont actually realise that protein is just a food. they think its some kind of steroid like substance that they must be "on protein" or "doing protein" that you must drink 2 shakes a day to get big, with no understanding of their diet as a whole.

while whey protein is a good way to increase the total, or to have a convieniant 50g when time is tight,

eating an egg or steak or chicken breast will also provide fats, vitamins and minerals and help you feel full.

Kind of like muesli, except more crunchy! A lot of store bought ones have loads of sugar though...

    400g chopped mixed nuts
    200g sunflower or pumpkin seeds

Mix all seeds in a blender until they are in small fragments

    Add 900g porridge oats
    100g coconut flakes
    100g almond flakes
    100g linseed

Mix in a big bowl. Add 300-400ml warm water
    5 dessert spoons sunflower oil
    3 dessert spoons honey
    Mix all

Spread out on 1-2 trays. It takes about 40 mins to cook at 220 degrees and you need to spread it thinly on the trays, and stir it ever 3-4 minutes. Eventually it will all look toasted and there will be no moisture left. Dont let it clump together. You could mix in raisins towards the end if you like - they burn so be careful. Then eat with yoghurt and banana over the top for breakfast?

This makes a really big batch so keep in airtight container.
