While watching Sons of Anarchy recently I noticed that Dayton Callie who plays Chief Wayne Unser in the show came off across very much like Paul Giamatti and then read in the SoA thread that somebody basically said the same thing. Then I got thinking about the character Phillip Seymour Hoffman played in Along Came Polly and how that part was obviously written for Jack Black.

So good people of After Hours, which other actors have been cast in roles which you think could easily have been played by far more effective actors and indeed, may actually have been cast in roles written for others.

    Shane Filan?

Bankrupt and barely a celebrity, does that fit the criteria?

I like cheese. Especially Gouda. No idea what the OP is on about, but s/he writes about stuff I don't understand beautifully.

Philip Seymour Hoffman is one of the most feted actors of his generation. He was great in that role too and stole the show as per usual.

Philip Seymour Hoffman plays a variant of a fat whiney dickhead in every single film he's in. He's decent but his range is limited.

The Talented Mr. Ripley, Doubt, Capote three very different films were Seymour Hoffman shows off a smidgen of his range. He is certainly no poor man's Jack Black.

No, but the point is the role was obviously written for Jack Black. Him and Stiller were in the height of their bromance at the time.

He plays fat whiney dickheads in the three films you've mentioned. I agree he's not the poor mans Jack Black though.
