Extractor fan for an island unit

In the middle of a kitchen re-fit and we have run into a problem with extraction. The plan was to have an overhead extractor fan over the island/hob and vent it through the ceiling and out the back of the house. The exterior walls have been replaced with bi-fold doors so there is nowhere to put it there. Problem is the steel girder going across the entire back of the house. The structural engineer won't allow any drilling through the steel which leaves us with very few options. We can't run it alongside the steel as the timber joists are running the opposite way.
One option would be to pipe it upstairs and out through the bedroom overhead which is not ideal. Another option would be a downdraft extractor which could go out under the floor. However, I haven't read any great reviews on these and they are very expensive. Would a filter hood provide enough extraction for a hob ?

Your only option is to put up a standard canopy fan and use charchoal filters.

Problem is people don't change them - they have a life span..

Thanks Wiked, charcoal filters is it so. I reckoned as much, and I will remember to change them ;)
    Cheers
