Just wondering if anyone can tell me if its possible to put a car through the NCT test if it doesn't have current tax or insurance?

I'm looking at the bangernomics and fixer-upper threads and wondering if you took a gamble on one, could you trailer it to an NCT center to find out what it'd need to pass (unless of course it passes straight away :D) before splashing out money on an insurance policy that you'll only be cancelling if the car needs too much work?
