Teaching English as a Foreign Language is an unregulated market, prospective employers set their own rules but being a native speaker from Ireland and having a third level degree would probably put you well ahead of the opposition. TEFL schools tend to like Irish instructors because unlike lot of Brits and Australians and Canadians, most Paddies have a fairly neutral accent which non-English speakers find easier to understand.

Frankly I doubt if your 'cert' is worth the paper it's written on - who issued it?

    Hi there galwaytown,

I've moved your thread from our Travel forum over into the Teaching Abroad forum where it would be better suited.

    Thanks,

    Hi Galwaytown,

I am thinking of doing a weekend tefl course. I am just wondering is it ACELS approved? Thanks

Not sure what ACELS is?I have discovered that the TEFL certs have little or no credibility luckily I have my degree and this alone will qualify people for most Teaching English jobs

The TEFL certs will suffice depending on the country you wish to teach. I am currently looking at a number of vacancies within China where they require a minimum of 100/140 hours TEFL cert.

Generally speaking, but not in all cases, the TEFL cert will suffice for a lot of developing countries. If you want to teach English in the EU, for example, then you may want to look at the ACELS or CELTA, especially if you have no experience with teaching.

ACELS is a qualification accredited by the Irish Department of Education and is recognised internationally.

Last poster is correct. Being a native speaker of the language is your greatest asset. A degree in anything is a real advantage and ACELS is the trump card. Online TEFL courses lasting a weekend really are a waste of time IMO.

I myself am in the position where I have ACELS, strong business background and related business qualifications and teaching experience. I want to get experience teaching the language to business professionals in Europe.

Any leads / suggestions from other posters?!
