Hi guys, I have to make this journey in a couple of weeks and basically I haven't traveled north of the M6 to often.

AA route planner is sending me Galway> Athlone> turning on to the N55 to Co. Monaghan.

Is this the best way to go?

I would suggest going via Mullingar and Kells (both towns are bypassed) on the N52 - more motorway and generally a better road. Only a few minutes longer.

M 6 to Athlone and then the N 55 to Cavan and cut across country to Cootehill and Ballybay is a bit shorter distance wise. The N 52 is no better or worse than the N 55 while the M 6 is a fair bit from Mullingar and it's a long town to bypass.

Whatever way you go, the roads around Cavan and Monaghan are very windy at the best of times to make sure you are sure of your route before you head off.

Cavan-Clones-Monaghan-Clontibret would be an easier drive. Not shorter but easier.

Thanks for all the replies guys.

I'll have to leave early 05:30ish, its a long spin for me and I'll have a full car but as long as there isn't icy road conditions it should be a bit of an adventure!

    +1
A sat nav or journey planner might send you to turn off at Clones cross country, or even Cavan-cootehill-cross country the rest of the way, but you really don't want to do that.
Cavan-clones isn't the best of roads but is liveable and the very worst of stretches are gone. Clones Monaghan is of a pretty decent standard and then back down the way on the n2 is a breeze.

The only thing to watch out for is to not miss the turn for the n54 there the other side of Cavan at butlersbridge as the big road continues on to enniskillen and you have to turn right for clones/ Monaghan.
