    Good review from HardOCP.

They test Asus 290x with custom cooling vs reference 780ti, overclocking both as far as they can reasonably go. 780ti is convincingly faster, even with reference cooling vs custom Asus 290x.

Ofc it is, it's 130 dollars more mrsp :). Anyways, the real value is in custom 290s. 290xs are v bad value in comparison to 290s (similar to 7950 vs 7970, but even moreso in this case). The 290x is only 3 to 4% faster per clock tha the 290. And custom 290s can be hand for 370 - 400 euro :) delivered.

Not a great overclock either. Trix seems to be the best cooler overall so far, people reaching 1200mhz at 1.3v and keeping both the VRMs and chip cool.

MSRP prices don't mean much these days. Actual market price for that 290x they tested is only $20 less than the 780ti. For some reason it seems like relative pricing of AMD gpu's is better in Europe - best prices are close to US prices whereas Nvidia cards have big markup in Europe over the US.

I know mining has created a lot of demand for AMD gpu's, but I mystified why it impacts US so much more than Europe.

Not quite sure why, although I'd guess higher European electricity costs probably have alot to do with it.

Yeah, I'd say so. Although tbh I would vouch that competiveness has something to do with it as well. So many good German etailers ya know? US is dominated by Newegg (who are gouging to f*ck), Amazon (not as bad) mainly. Basically, electricity and dem Germans IMO.

I think even at mrsp 290x is horrible value compared to 290, which, as I said, is only 3-4% slower clock or clock. Trix 290 for 370 - 390 euro on geizdhls, best non ref cooler so far (VRMs included), clock to 1150-1200 on 1.3v, sorted. :)

290 is best bang for buck. I have one without the custom cooler and its grand, not as loud as people say and no overheating issues when overclocvked

Have you replaced the thermal paste with some aftermarket stuff like MX4? The stock stuff is supposed to be poorly applied, you might get a few deg knocked off your peak temps by replacing it :)

And ya, 290 is great value, much much better than the 290x.

Have you purchased from geizdhls before??? I'm looking to pick up the 290 Trix but can't really find many places delivering to europe. Overclockers are looking for some serious cash for it compared to the american sites.

It's just a comparison site. It searches through popular etailers and compares their prices. The thing is, some sites (like Hardwareversand) feed the site temporary links that are actually a bit cheaper than the price they display to people who access the same product on their site normally.

Don't buy from US, crazy shipping + import fees probably equal 100 plus euro. Use geizdhls to get a good price and he it delivered to you.
