  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 21,693 Mod ✭✭✭✭helimachoptor

She's just been told its only the saloon version she can get..
so folks of motors... what should she go for..

    Saloon 316D (€440 BIK)
    A4 (€420 BIK)
    Passat Bluemotion (€300 BIK)
Inisignia (not sure on spec but has inbuilt sat nav) (€320 BIK)
    Mondeo (€300 BIK)
I40 Exec (not sure on BIK

We currently have a 09 318D with Msport badging :p

Just to add... 1st baby on the way in July, frequent enough trips to Mayo (from Dublin) to be considered aswell.

    She's currently in a fluence..

The F31 316d (Touring) has 65kg on the F30, coming in at 1570kg unladen compared with 1505kg. Both are 116bhp with the F30 pushing 77bhp per tonne and the F31 sitting back at 73.6bhp. For comparison in terms of power a Ford Focus TCDI 1.6 at 115bhp will do 85bhp to the tonne because of the lighter weight (1,340kg). The 316d is a detuned 320d engine so maybe with a mapping it could bump those figures to ~143bhp (same as the 318d). The point of a touring is to be comfortable for long trips and eating a bit of road. You've got the 535d and other similar (fun!) models available that'll do the job much better even if you go down a few years.

the newer model a4s are pretty nice. I think I would take that, and they are a bit less common than the 316d's

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,127 ✭✭✭✭Idbatterim

that model a4, goes back to 2008, the bm platform is 2012... I also think the 316 is 2L detuned engine...

Not sure what part of the country you are in but around here one is just as common as the other.

OP, is a VW CC an option? More interior room and boot space than an A4 or 3 Series and a bit rarer on the road.

Nope CC not an option unfortunately, personally i'd be keen on an estate but its not an option it seems.

Wife is leaning towards the insignia, she doesnt do massive mileage which needs to be factored into the decision also.

I'd have the 3 Series out of that list but not a 316d. From the rest I'd go for a decent spec Insignia.

You can have a 141 Audi or BMW outside the front door how are the others even featuring. The begruding alone makes it a no brainer, besides your average joe here only sees the marque, they probably couldn't tell the difference between a 316d or an m3!!!

I would guess that as bik is mentioned in the options, it is a factor. For a non car person having a couple of hundred euro in the pocket is worth more than a badge.

If she's currently in a Fluence, anything from that list is a step up.

The BMW 316d isn't actually that bad. I wouldn't order one for someone last year until he'd test driven it, and confirmed it was OK. He went and drove one, came back to say it's not that bad, so I ordered it and delivered it over when it arrived.

Going in with low expectations, I was pleasantly surprised. It's not going to win the traffic light Grand Prix, but it's not going to get left behind in traffic either. Had another driver later on last year who's wife has a 316i, so had thoughts the d would be similar to drive. Again, after a test drive he ordered a 316d (touring) and he's very happy with it.

With a new arrival on the way though, the 3 series wouldn't be the most practical choice. Boot isn't really that big for all the stuff you'll need to carry on the trips to Mayo. Even the boot in the Touring is laughably small for an estate (A4 is similar as well).

If it was me, I'd be tempted by the Mondeo, as long as it's the Titanium Plus model. It's being replace late this year (so they say - again), so they've thrown the kitchen sink at the standard specification list. Leather, Touch Screen Nav - and it's still pretty good to drive. Even the 1.6 version is nippy around town, but if it's up against the 3 Series / A4, you should be looking at the 2.0Tdci 140ps version. Get the Hatchback if the Estate isn't an option, and the boot is more than big enough to swallow all that required for a weekend away. Has the benefit of a low retail price for the low BIK, while probably the highest standard specification.

So true.. the Fluence has 80K KMs and its falling apart and its obvious less on the design/comfort side than our current 318D.

I would like a touring, however the options are limited to saloon variants.

Wife is keen on the Insignia, I'm keen on the Mondeo and the Passat.

    Here are the full options

FORD Mondeo DIESEL SALOON 1.6TDCI 115PS GRAPHITE 4DR
HYUNDAI i40 DIESEL SALOON Executive 1.7 Diesel 4DR
VW PASSAT DIESEL SALOON 1.6 TDI BLUEMOTION 4DR
OPEL INSIGNIA DIESEL SALOON 2.0CDTI 140PS SC 4DR
BMW 3 SERIES DIESEL SALOON 316D ES 4DR
VW PASSAT DIESEL SALOON 2.0 TDI COMFORTLINE 4DR
    AUDI A4 DIESEL SALOON 2.0 TDI 120BHP SE 4DR

Thanks for all the advice lads, its very much appreciated

Think i'd go for the hyundai out of that list if it was the 134bhp version of the 1.7-litre.

BMW 3 SERIES DIESEL SALOON 316D ES 4DR
VW PASSAT DIESEL SALOON 2.0 TDI COMFORTLINE 4DR
    AUDI A4 DIESEL SALOON 2.0 TDI 120BHP SE 4DR

what ever is the highest spec out of these 3 I would be going for . the biggest engines out of the lot , 2/3 have the badge envy factor , all comfy and nicely designed , Id say the bmw will have leather whereas the others would be cloth.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 481 ✭✭Matthewjohn

As far as I know the se a4 has leather

in fairness, the "slow" 316d might be slow by bm standards, but its probably less slow than the other cars being mentioned (bar possibly the audi), also isnt the BIK best on the 316d?

That's a weird hodge podge of a list! Love to see who put that together - 99% sure it wasn't me :pac:

Mondeo is the boggo base model. Doesn't even have Bluetooth on the Graphite, although will probably be added for company use.

A4 has the best standard specification, having leather, keyless and a few other bits and pieces. Performance is similar to the 316d, but better spec. As per OSI's post, the 316d doesn't get the Nav/Leather/Sports Steering wheel that 318's and above get FOC at the moment.

Passat would be the most powerful (140ps -the 316d is 116 and the A4 is 120), but cloth seats.

If BIK is an issue, there's a €5,000 difference in price between the Passat and A4, which would be sizeable on a monthly basis. Wouldn't consider that model Mondeo at all.

i40 is beginning to look like the pick of the bunch. Insignia isn't too bad in SC specification, but now comes standard with nasty looking 16" Alloys. Climate, Cruise, Bluetooth, Nav and the fancy new entertainment system, but I think the i40 Exec would be a better place to be.

Test drive the i40 and Insignia, and see which is preferable would be my advice. Then, find out who's it's being ordered through, and kindly ask if a mistake could be made on ordering an Insignia so it comes in as a 5dr hatch with 17" wheels - sometimes mistakes happen ;)

Car type is dependent on level and the wife cant chose from the all.

Planning to test drive over the next couple of weekends, on the last part.. i wish :D
