I bought a new car, the garage put it through the NCT etc... I never even thought to look at expiry date which is now in a few weeks... in other words 6 months after I bought the car? Why didnt they just get the regular NCT? Is it cheaper or easier to pass a 6 month one or something? Im feeling a bit ripped off to be honest.

How old is the car and when did the last NCT expire?
There is no 6 month one. It gets backdated to its last expiry

probably the NCT was well out of date when they put it through, by either 6 months or a year and a half depending on the age of the car - so when the NCT was issued it was only issued to the originally expected NCT end date.

Think yourself lucky that they paid the full fee for 6 months rather than you!

The NCT isn't a year from test date, it's a year from last expired test date.
Hence the garage probably had it sitting untested for about 6 months and when you bought it they got it tested for you.

...if it's been sitting 6 months, you want to keep a close eye on your tyres...they can deform if car not regularly moved...can be dangerous, can blow out (voice of experience..... had one blow on a Cortina I had not long bought...looked perfect...I was doing 80mph at the time... other side was nearly going too!))

Is it not done from the date the car was first registered?

NCT has expired over a year on a car over 10 years old as it is an annual test, does it have to be backdated?

Errm. My NCT expired in July 2008. With the grace of God, a bit of eyelash fluttering and sheer good luck, I have escaped sanction so far. Now I want to become a valued member of society again. Whats the story for me? If I put the car through the test tomorrow -is the cert backdated to July 2008? I'd value your advice.

Hand yourself in and do your porridge.

Cert will be dated back to the last due date which will be the anniversary of the date of registration (or date of import for an imported used car, depending on when it was imported) assuming car is over 10 years old

The car was registered in July 2003. It was not an import. I haven't had it tested since I bought it in 2007, and the cert was valid up until July 2008. So if I get it tested tomorrow, they will only give me a cert from July 2008 til July 2009?
    Am I missing something?

No they will give you a cert that will expire in July 2014, and you will have to redo the test in July 2014 to get a cert for 2014/2015.

If you NCT the car tomorrow you'll have an NCT valid until July 2014.

Because the car is now over 10 years old the NCT will only be valid for 1 year each time.

Your car would have been due an NCT in July 2013 which would have been valid for one year, so if you get it tested now then you will get the remainder of that years cycle, and the next test will be due in July 2014.

Yes, you'll have to do 6 NCTs back to back, but you'll also have to backdate the condition of your car. So if you had bald tyres in 2009, make sure you put them back on for the second NCT. Likewise if you spent a year in 2011 without a headlight bulb, it has to come out for the backdated 2011 test. It's the fairest system :)

Wait till May and then go to NCT - if pass your next NCT will be July 2015
