P45 worries and back to employment after depression

    Hi boards.ie guys and gals,

Just to give some background first...
I am 34 yrs old. Unemployed for 5 years now. I have been suffering with depression and very low self esteem for pretty much all of the 5 yrs, which put a dent in my job prospects.

In my recent cv i have stated that i have worked in my family business for the last 4 years and was then made unemployed. This is an attempt to hide the massive hole in my CV. I am trying to hide my depression and massive unemployment period. My family did get me to help out every now and then just to get me outdoors for a bit of fresh air.

Where a problem is now arising is I have a promising interview coming up and I am worried that in order to accept the job I'd have to state that I was unemployed for 5 yrs instead of 1yr which I have listed because they'd have to see a P45. (I am not sure what they'll need to see)

Would the new employer look for a P45? The last P45 I think I have is 5 yrs ago from a company that went under. I can't get my family to issue a P45 because I never worked there as an employee.

I really want to work, this last year my life has really changed. I have more confidence, I have new skills from a great I.T course I did and I have built an impressive portfolio of the work to show what i am capable of doing.

I want an employer to see a confident person who has been unemployed for 1yr and who has chosen to upskill by doing a course.

I know it's not honest but honesty in this case is highly unlikely to get me a job.

I'd be greatful for any advice about how p45's work in relation to my issue. Can I walk into a job without a P45?

I've never had to give a p45 to a new employer, all forms etc are filled out and given up to the revenue commissioners after you get the job.

    hi want2work,

so sorry to hear about your unemployment situation, I have a few buddies who had the same problem with the hole in their cv, most of them had to emigrate unfortunately

with regards to the p45 - the purpose of this document is simply for you to be taxed correctly in a new job with respect to what you may have earned earlier in the year. this is called the cumulative basis of taxation.

Your employer will not be (*should not be) interested about the details on your p45, it is simply to tax you correctly. As you have not worked this year, you will not have a relevant p45. Your old p45 is not of any use for payroll purposes.

Your employment history will be a question for the potential new employer but there is no need to worry about a p45.

sorry I read this back and I am not sure if I have explained it very well:(

Thanks for the replies guys, much appreciated. That puts me at ease. If they don't ask for a P45 is there another way that they'll be able to tell what tax bracket I am in?

when you start a new job, ring the tax office with the new employers tax registration number and they will issue a tax credit cert to your employer which outlines how you should be taxed
