Note, I said interesting, not good looking. That spoiler on the back reminds me of the Merc SLS AMG, the front is....different, I'll give them that.

Side profile is nice. Front isn't. Looks like someone saw an Enzo once for a split second, when the first pics came out, then tried to copy it from memory. Someone that hasn't got a great memory.

No, I like it too, Very batmobile. But it does seem to scream Farrari mixed with a veyron to me.

I love it. Keep in mind kids, it's concept so it has,to be bold and mad. What ever is going to be end product I Already like it.

They've mashed together a Nissan GT-R, a Lexus LFA and a LaFerrari and got this.... and I think it actually kinda works.

Yup, one of the purposes of a relaunch concept like this is quite simply to get the news out there and make people aware that a new Supra is coming. The discussion over a crazy new design helps that news to spread.

I like it. And if the GT86 is anything to go by, then it'll be an epic car.

But with a much higher price tag and hopefully over 200hp. This thing looks like a super car so might be priced like one too.

It's very low. Have they never seen a speed bump?. hah.

I think it looks stunning - the car looks like its doing 120 while standing still. They'll dilute it down, sadly.

They won't, it'll more or less look like that, apart from some tweaks to meet stupid regulations on pedestrian safety etc.
It'll be their new Supra, whether they'll call it that or not is a different story, but it'll be priced and perform accordingly.
About time really, but it's good news. Toyota are becoming cool again!

They would want to lose that thing on the bonnet anyway.

The nose will remain however as it will be the next generation front design for Toyota. The NS4 (possible Avensis successor) has the same type nose albeit less agressive.

    FYP.

With a design like that, it'd be ludicrous to think it couldn't keep up with a hot hatch. >350hp or don't bother.

When I mentioned the GT86 I meant in the spirit of why that car was designed, not as a comparitive car. The GT86 will remain their sports car, this will be their 911-level rival, like the original Supra was.

500bhp would probably be the status quo for cars in its class but the LFA is 550bhp at the moment so I'd expect a little bit less than that.

And 5 (!) years later, they release a heavily diluted final version, which looks very similar to the BMW Z4M : https://jalopnik.com/the-2020-toyota-supra-is-finally-here-with-335-hp-does-1831719119

Pricing starts at £54k in the UK, can't imagine we'll see many of them here.

Incredibly ugly, worse than the original concept

A Z4 in drag? I can't believe a proud engineering company like Toyota have fallen so low.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,558 ✭✭✭✭lawred2

    So it's just a BMW

    What's the point?

Did Toyota forget how to design sports cars?

How did that take 5 years, SEAT ruined the looks of the Audi A4 in 18 months.

Tbh I probably am, or would be if I was English, the Irish market is so tiny for sports cars it’s not really a factor in car companies decisions. Plus our insane VRT means this will we ridiculously expensive over here.

That said I don’t see the reasoning behind this at all, it’s a rebadged beemer with a less appealing badge? I just looked at the interior pics and honestly If you hide the Toyota emblem I would think it is aftuqlly a BMW, uses all of BMs buttons, steering wheel, fascias, even the handbrake switch.

On the looks front I’ll reserve judgement till I see one in the flesh, most modern cars look completely different in pics to in real life as you don’t get a sense of size or presence unless it’s in front of you, I’m really not sure how the front will look though.

As for drivetrain, it’s actually a detuned beemer engine from some quick googling and the lack of a manual option means the entire market for nostalgic 30-40 year old car heads yearning after the old supra is most likely out.

Very interested to see how it sells worldwide.

Purposefully an ugly car, they left room for the aftermarket tuners consciously I reckon.

I like it. Just enough amount of madness in it for me. Obviously I will never be able to own one.

Whats this about it being BMW? Does it share platform with BMW Z or something?

    It's basically a badge engineered BMW Z4.
BMW chassis, engine, gearbox, suspension and interior.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,541 ✭✭✭Leonard Hofstadter

It even appears in BMW internal coding, it's the J29 (the latest Z4 is G29).

I think it's a terrible shame there's no manual option.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,929 ✭✭✭✭ShadowHearth

So they basically reskinned Z4 and called it supra?
I am no expert, but Supra was loved not because of its looks. Its engine and manual transmition that could take so much power and abuse. If its just a bmw with Toyota design, then it is really sad.

At least when they had venture with Subaru, they still had their own touch.

I am pretty sure I read some article a while ago that manufacturers will cooperate with each other for new cars a lot more. Its expensive to make your own car, but if you can make one model, split the bill and just change badges, then its a lot more financially attractive. Not a new concept, but it will be a lot more spread.
Mazda mx5 and fiat 124 is kind of same?

I've listened to people for years who longed for the old sporty cars of Toyota and when the gt86 came out and looks great have never drove one mind you and are a bit of a bargain now sort of just ignored it why do you see so few on the roads when they are accessible whereas this new supra looks like it will be out of reach to most?

Meh, I'd be disappointed in them, but they'll have to try harder if they want to top the indignation they elicited from me when they not only killed the Hiace for Europe but then tried to allude to the name with a ****ing badge engineered PSA shed that they replaced it with..
