    Hi All

I'm considering the Garmin Virb for a bit of recording

I have a few questions which I can't seem to find answer to:

    1. File sizes/ recording time (for example my contour roam2 records roughly 15 mins per gb in micro sd card)
    2. Recording time at 720p ( can only find "up to 3 hours recording time" from battery at 1080p, would this time double at 720p for the longer rides?)
    3. Does the gos overlay only work with the Virb elite?
    4. Will the garmin edge 510 be compatible with the camera with HR Strap and cadence sensor and also the gps overlay?

Sorry for all the questions I'm gonna buy the edge 510 and the Virb together to replace the edge 200 and contour roam2 set up I already have, it's going to be a fair chunk of change so I don't want to buy the wrong gear for what I want

Check pricenoia.com for Amazon prices. Its only slightly cheaper on Amazon.it but the prices change all the time.

I ordered one from the states and should have it early next week. I had hassle getting the mounts so ordered them directly from Snow and Rock in Dundrum. They matched the Wiggle.co.uk prices which is about the cheapest I could find them.

I have someone bringing it back for me. I wouldn't have got it posted from the US to here as the customs charge would have been too much.

I got mine about a week ago , and love it!
For those interested here are my impressions.......

Firstly im not a cyclist, sure i cycle to work and back but its not my main thing. I do mostly Camping, Hikeing , Kayaking and climbing.
I bought the Virb for 2 main reasons...

1, Ease of use. A friend of mine as the Gopro and every time I use it i just hate the interface and the silly buttons on it.

2, Data, pure GPS data. Seeing how far, how fast , elevation etc etc is great to see on a video in my view.

As of last week I bought it for 260 Euro, this is the Virb Elite model, Olive green. I had a mate who travels to the states regularly enough and the way we did it was he bought it from Amazon.com , shipped to his work HQ and then he brings it back home. currency conversion rate worked it out at 260 euro. Where if I were to walk in to a store in Dublin now , its an easy 400. ****ing maddness!

In terms of use, its very easy , if you are already familer with the Garmin products its a piece of cake, I already have the Garmin Etrex 30 for location so the Virb is similar in design at least for the buttons.

Oh its water proof right out of the box too.
Getting the data overlay on the video is very easy , just import , select the template and what data you want to display and its done. it seems to only do mp4 format right up to 1080p.
Timelapse, and slomo is very cool indeed!
One thing to note is the monochrome screen. On the box it looks like a full blown regular screen, however in actual fact the screen is totaly dependent on ambient light. In other words you wont be able to see the screen at night as it has no light of its own. this is how it can last so long at 3 hrs.
If your going to be doing all your stuff during the day then its no big deal , if your going to be using it at night then of course use your torch.

Having the screen built in is a plus, as it allows you to frame your shots before hand. the Iphone app works well enough, but you cant view recordings from it yet via the phone app. You can set up the virb from the phone and even start and stop the recording but not actually see the reviews of those same recordings.

Mounts wise it comes with a cradle , with a flat and curved sticker plate for your helmet or what ever you want to mount it too.

I bought the wrist strap ( which is very verstile so far, I can strap it to my handle bars or backpack shoulder strap) and also a class10 64gb SD card which gives me 8 hrs recording at full on 1080p wide angle viewing.

Over all Im very happy with it and looking forward to taking it out on the trail.

Any questions go ahead Ill try and answer as best I can.

    Cheers

View angles for various zoom settings on Virb:

    Wide: 120° (horizontal)
    Zoom 1: 109° (horizontal)
    Zoom 2: 99° (horizontal)
    Ultra Zoom: 91° (horizontal) , 59° (vertical), 98° (diagonal)

I've measured the horizontal angle of view only, and extrapolated it for the Ultra zoom setting according to the image proportions. This cannot be done for an image with significant distorion, so there are no other angles for wide, zoom 1 and 2.

Not a scientific measurement, but shouldn't be off more than 1-2°.
