Any of the unltrasonic rodent repellants should do the job.

    Burn the house down.

    Let me rephrase:
Any that you buy in a real shop and not a PoundShop-by-any-other-name purveyor of crap should do the job.

    Ferret…

When you say 'a mouse' - hah! Friends of mine, farmers, used to store their grain in the attic - until the mice chewed through the rafters and the attic, grain and all, came down on them.

Magic beans would be much better tbh.

Op you need to lure him out with food then a trap unfortunately unfortunately. (assuming you can't get a trap in the cavity)

Peanut butter is a very effective bait.

    Use a ferret.

Stick a ferret in your cavity OP.

Or a hamster if you're Richard Gere.

Be careful it doesn't die there, it will stink the place out for weeks and could cost a fortune getting it sorted.

when there in the wall theres not a whole pile you can do,put traps down in the room and the attic above the room where its scratching and you might get it,if possible remove a section of skirting board and set trap there,a good branded ultrasonic repellant should help getting it out of there too

He must have an entry point, just put a trap there.

if only it was that easy.......,a mouse can squeeze through the smallest of gaps.a rats entry point is easy enough found,a mouse's on the other hand is very difficult.

    Peanut butter, chocolate and sultanas.

    They love them.

Lure them out gradually then use the shovel.

A dead mouse will cause little to no smell to be honest.

    A rat could stink.

Seriously, the best thing to do is:

    1) Constantly wash the floors (especially around the edges) with strongly-scented, preferably biological, detergent: mice lay a urinous scent trail and if they can't smell their normal route it makes them uneasy and they don't want to be there - but you have to do this *every day*.

    2) Leave traps around the edges of the floor, preferably concealed a bit. You can get live traps, but whether it's any less cruel to take a mouse and release it in a strange place miles away than to kill a couple to drive the others outdoor is a moot point.

Make a hole in the wall and start meowing into the cavity, throw in the odd hiss for extra effect.
