Would you be ashamed

Would you be ashamed to have your details published in the paper for not paying tax/rates/tv license?

I wouldn't. The only shame/regret I would feel was the fact I got caught.

    some examples

    http://www.tipperarystar.ie/news/local-news/thurles-council-may-do-name-and-shame-1-5791101
Thurles Town Council may engage in a name and shame programme if non paying rate customers do not make an effort to settle their bills, The Tipperary Star can reveal.

Rate recepits for 2012 are almost 40% short according to Thurles Town Clerk Mr Michael Ryan - a figure which shocked elected members and left them wondering what course of action to follow in a bid to recover some of the funds.

    http://www.revenue.ie/en/press/2013/pr-110613-defaulters-list.html
Today’s edition of Iris Oifigiúil contains details of published settlements completed by Revenue in the period 1 January 2013 to 31 March 2013.

Would you feel ashamed if your name was published for tax/rate/tv license evasion? 49 votes

No, it isn't. The tv licence isn't akin to stealing.

Who hasn't read the courts reports in the local paper and got a laugh out of a guy you hated getting busted for driving without a tax disc? It's all about the small victories.

Results are hidden for a reason so as not sway peoples opinion and will be revealed at the end of the poll. Will be interesting to see the final result.

It's already swayed my opinion. I won't vote in a hidden poll.

Stealing from who? If it's a tax then take it at source. if it's a fee for a service you don't use, and you don't pay it it's not stealing.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,754 ✭✭✭oldyouth

It's what differentiates skangers from decent citizens. One group has nothing to lose from being caught cheating the system and the 2nd group could actually lose the ability to provide for themselves and pay taxes if caught doing anything illegal

Nah I pay for my Tv, no chance I'm paying a fee to watch it.

How is it? What is being 'stolen' if you don't pay?

    Nothing.. that's what

TV licence evasion is like 30% meaning the list will be a hundred thousand names long.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 153 ✭✭Arrow.

    No.

It's not like those people can't afford it (in most cases I'd assume anyway).

There are plenty of people who flat our refuse to pay it - for reasons that's been discussed at length here before...

Ah come off it Evelyn, you of all people should know that RTE is sh1te.

    Calm down there.

You're the type of person the Government loves - tell them to cough up - give them any auld reason - and they'll pay.

Just because it's written into law doesn't mean it shouldn't be questioned.

If everyone was like you where would we be as a people?

I don't watch RTE. I stream, I download, I pay UPC - all paid for. So RTE can f*ck off.

No shame in owing money to anyone this days.

Why not name and shame the crooks who brought the country down not the working man behind on his already too high rates.

    This country is a disgrace.

I'll die before I pay for a Tv license.

lol, your not taking anything from somebody, your not giving it in the first place, so therefore not stealing

So let it be a subscription service and let them pay for it. Why should I?

Because RTE knows nobody in their right mind would pay for that rubbish.

A nice little political angle for the Government in turn for a TV Licence program. Nothing to see here!

If people watch it they should pay for it, they should have a card for it so only people who pay can watch it.

The f*ckin public broadcasting that not are legally required to pay for.

It's still absolutely nothing like theft.
theft is the taking of another person's property without that person's permission or consent, with the intent to deprive the rightful owner of it.

Not paying for the TV licence does none of those things

RTE are scum, playing up to their paymasters like puppies for a bowl of milk.

Only they aren't puppies. They're the propaganda weilding minions of the government. Entry level minions. The sh1t on my shoe. Why would I pay them?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,934 ✭✭✭Renegade Mechanic

Hang on.... Isnt the tv license fee being turned into a "broadcasting charge“? A blanket tax taken from our wages/ dole like the social charge so that if someone doesnt want to pay they may leave the country?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,420 ✭✭✭✭rob316

    Not really.

The current economic situation and the disgraceful behaviour of our bankers and public officials is giving such easy excuses to leeches on our society that will NEVER pay their way in this world.

"Why should we... bankers.... corrupt politicians....water tax....developers....etc."

Cnuts never did and never will contribute to society

    PUBLIC SERVICE BROADCASTING

I don't care if you don't pay but it is obvious whya country would need a funded channel

    PUBLIC SERVICE BROADCASTING

I don't care if you don't pay but it is obvious whya country would need a funded channel

And the onus is on them to be PUBLIC SERVICE BROADCASTERS. Not lying lapdogs for the government.

Its a two way street EC.

Maybe take the finger out and do a bit of work. Then people might want to pay you.
