    Hi folks need some advice on the above car.
    Thinking of buying a renault scenic 1.4 petrol it has 109,000 miles on her.
    Current owner said the power steering pump needs to be replaced but that's it.
    It has NCT until August 2014.
    Never bought renault before but I need something to ferry the kids around and this ticks all the boxes for me.
    Has anyone got any dealings with these cars? Are they reliable or should I steer clear.
    Any advice would be much appreciated.

    Cheers.

    My sister has a 98 Scenic which she bought about 4 yrs ago and is very happy with it . I wouldn't be a great fan of Renault but this one has now about 160 K mls and has been very reliable . And I know of a few others who have them (00/01/02) and they are very happy with them .
    The only problem that has cropped up a few days ago is the immobiliser - and apparently its common on Scenics and Lagunas . What condition is the key fob in ; there should be 2 keys with the car - replacements can be expensive from the dealer;
    If car has been serviced regularly ( service history would be a big plus ) it should be OK . They are a nice family car .
    How knowledgeable are you re cars yourself as regards checking it out :
    * any rust ?
    * check exhaust system - can get very rusty ;
    * does everything work ? lights,gauges,windows,central locking,all seat
    belts,all door locks (incl boot),seats secure and adjustable;
    * If it has ABS does light come on and go off as it should ?
    * service history ?
    * how many owners ?
    * tyres - much tread left , are they wearing evenly ?
    * engine bay - any oil leaks ? coolant leaks ? signs of overheating ? has it
    coolant or just plain water ?
    Or you could get a friend to check it over for you .
    A current NCT is good - but a clutch thats on its last legs for example won't fail the test ? wheel bearings etc could get through but fail soon after ?
    Probably only confusing you but just a few pointers :)

    Hi dooroy, thanks so much for your detailed reply.
    Well I'm viewing the car tomorrow and I will give it a good once over.
    I've always had Japanese cars like the carina or early primeras so I've never had to worry really about them falling apart.
    But the scenic is in my price range and seems great for the kids.
    I've learnt that the newer models are the worst of them and like you said the earlier ones are more reliable fingers crossed.
    Will let you know how I get on and thanks again for your advice.

    The 01 scenic wont have an electric handbrake.

    That model scenic is probably more reliable than the one that replaced it.

    Impossible to answer your question without knowing the price. A 13 year old scenic in need of repair is worth a couple of hundred euro.
