Irish Motor Tax Prior 08

    Hi all,
Just abit of a rant on the defects on our Irish economy. Nothing new.

I can't understand why at this stage the government hasn't changed the tax system that means all cars prior 2008 are based on the co2 emissions as it for 2008 cars on.

I drive a 2006 seat leon 1.9tdi 90bhp, I count myself lucky as a 22 year old starting off and absolutely love the car and love driving it. ect. But it bloody brakes my heart coughing up near €700 in road tax for a car that isn't quite a performance car. I have no obligation to paying my taxes and contributing to society by all means.

When buying my car 2 years ago, I wanted a 2008 model but just couldn't stretch the budget and couldn't find what I wanted.

Currently, the people who drive cars older than 2008 are those who have low incomes or can't afford to change to a new car due to mortgages, other utilities. However, those who are somewhat better off and driving newer cars are benefiting from more than half the cost of motor tax in some instances, taking closest comparisons.

I know initially in 08/09 there was the major gap between prices of 07 and 08 cars being so wide, but surely this difference is now gone and motor tax should be harmonised.

This clearly I believe is another example of our goverment stamping on those worst off.

I have always thought that motor tax should be based on the original value of the car for the first five years of its life. That way someone who has just bought a sandero is not paying more than someone who bought a 7 series. Unfortunately the green party were left in charge of this and made a mess of it.

    Realistically though, why would they?

Apart from that, if they were to retrospectively change everyone to co2 tax, you'd have 1.0 micras that suddenly cost €1000 a year to tax. Older cars have higher emissions generally.

Then you may ask "why not give people the option of whatever's cheaper?"

Hahaha, like they'd do that! Its more tax they want to take in, not less.

You are right though. There is a gulf between the two systems. The cc system is inherintly unfair and is disproportionately hard on the higher sized engines.

It'd be naive to think that anyone would actually do anything about it though. It won't be long till 08 will be considered propert old (its already 6 years)
