I want to buy a iPhone as a present for someone in NI in mid contract.
    e.g. http://www.carphonewarehouse.com/mobiles/mobile-phones/APPLE_IPHONE_5C_16GB/PPAY?colourCode=PINK

    this states
SIM free iPhone 5c will lock to the network of the first SIM used

the phone comes with a prepaid SIM.

Basically my question is, does anyone know if you get a phone in a box in which you can insert your own sim (which will then be locked to that network) and bin the prepaid SIM or has the prepaid SIM already been inserted in the phone locking it?

I don't think they're locked to the prepaid SIM but why not get a proper unlocked one from Apple?

Remember seeing something a while ago about iPhones from CPW locking to the first network.

Phones bought from CPW are in fact locked to the first sim used.

CPW are a bit cheaper, but perhaps not worth the trouble.

I wonder how it will work to request the unlock

You still go to the provider that it's locked to.

Yes but what do you do when they say it's not belonging to their network. I had to get apple to email me proof of th replacing the phone before eMobile would request the unlock.

Replacements work differently, you require proof to be sent. The providers will have the IMEI registered so they can process the unlock request if it was needed.

AFAIK, thats the way all iPhones work, apart from the Apple unlocked ones. First SIM card in, it locks.
