The first handing out of gongs this calendar year was for the winners of the New York Film Critics Circle awards, which were announced in December but presented on January 6th 2014, so these are the New York Film Critics Circle Awards 2013.

Something of a pointer for the Golden Globes and the Oscars, but of course not definitive. Those winners in full:

    Best Picture: American Hustle

Best Director: Steve McQueen – 12 Years a Slave

Best Actor: Robert Redford – All Is Lost

Best Actress: Cate Blanchett – Blue Jasmine

Best Supporting Actor: Jared Leto – Dallas Buyers Club

Best Supporting Actress: Jennifer Lawrence – American Hustle

Best Screenplay: Eric Warren Singer & David O. Russell, American Hustle

Best Foreign Language Film: Blue is the Warmest Colour

    Best Documentary: Stories We Tell

    Special Award: Frederick Wiseman

Best Animated Film: The Wind Rises

Best Cinematography: Bruno Delbonnel – Inside Llewyn Davis

Best First Film: Ryan Coogler – Fruitvale Station

A few comments. Slightly surprised to see Redford pick up Best Actor, although it's not a particular vintage year for outstanding male lead performances. I would have given it to either Bruce Dern for Nebraska or Matthew McConaughey for Dallas Buyers Club.

I think that momentum is starting to build behind Cate Blanchett to pick up Best Actress at the Golden Globes and Academy Awards. It's probably between her and Judi Dench for Philomena. Jennifer Lawrence is also emerging as the front runner for Best Supporting Actress in the GGs and Oscars. Two Oscars before your 24th birthday would be a mindblowing achievement.

As it is, the gong she picks up from the New York Critics Circle goes next to dozens of others. An incredible talent.

Would have no issue with Cate Blanchett picking up an award for Blue Jasmine. One of my favourites from 2013 and she dominated that movie from start to finish.

Best Picture - American Hustle !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Honestly not deserving of this award by a long shot, it deserved some of the acting awards but not best picture.

12 Years a Slave deserves best picture, actor, supporting actor and actress and director imo

not sure about best actor for 12 years a slave, I have heard great things about Robert Redfords performance this year and have to see the movie before I comment, I will be watching blue jasmine soon and have heard great things about Cate Blanchetts performance in that.

I would give 12 years a slave best picture, and if I had to pick a runner up from what I have seen so far it would be gravity.

For me Redford gives a better performance.
