The Philips has a 1ms response time compared with the Samsung's 5ms which would mean the Philips would perform better with fast moving scenes in movies and games. I'd go for the Philips myself as I'm a fan of their products but I'm sure either 1 wouldn't disappoint.

Edit: The Philips is 3" bigger, has dvi and is brighter so I'd go with the Philips as that's a good price for a 27" monitor.

Thanks Corsav6, was looking at the ms response time myself, only thing I was worried about was that Philips seem to get a lot of bad reviews when compared to Samsung. Anyone else have any opinions?

Check out the LG IPS panels on Amazon and elsewhere, very good quality picture, superior to TN panels. A fair few people on here have bought them, no real complaints except the stand is wobbly. I was mounting mine with a monitor arm so it didn't matter, both delivered at the time for about 170 if I recall correctly

+1 on the LG, great panels but the plastics can feel cheap. Its probably the only other manufacturer I would consider as I really don't rate Samsung unless you go for their top models.

You do realise a smaller screen at the same resolution will always look better. The native resolution of a 27" monitor is 2560x1440, much higher than 1920x1080, but this one is 1080p

If it were me, I'd go with the Samsung, hands down.

That Philips is a TN panel, meaning the viewing angles won't be great, the colours and contrast will be lacking as well.

From the looks of things, that Samsung uses a VA panel, which means better colours, much wider viewing angles, and mind-blowing contrast; very dark blacks, and very bright whites.

Response times mean very little now-a-days, to be perfectly honest. 1ms sounds lovely, but you pay for it with everything else about the monitor. I've gamed on 12ms monitors before and barely noticed responsiveness issues at all.

I've used TNs plenty of times before, and I've the misfortune to currently be stuck using one. I never will again if I can help it.

Thanks some from useful advice there, LG is a no go for me cause had one of the 42"LED Tv's and broken down after just under 2 years. Really inclined to go for the Samsung even though the slightly bigger screen would be nice and taught the 1ms would be a big difference. Have a Samsung 24" at the moment and its a nice monitor and has last 5 years and only recent developed a pixel green line down the right hand side.
So all in all people think the Samsung would give the best picture overall?

Just because you've bought one LG product and it's failed doesn't mean everything is bad... Every company has products that fail, and statistically it has to happen to someone.

How would it compare to the Dell Ultrasharps?

The contrast ratio will be around three times higher, and it'll probably be slightly brighter too. Response times will be roughly the same, and the Dells (at least the M variants) will probably have slightly less accurate colours, but at that point you're into margin-of-out-of-box-error type stuff. Also, VAs tend to have slightly narrower viewing angles than IPS.

Dell U2412M at that price point ,fantastic monitor.
That samsung looks decent too although a quick google and i found this review, and they say colours arenet great and its not great for gaming.
I dont know how true this is but thought id mention it, might be worth looking into a bit more before a purchase.
