MGM HD closes down on the 16th Jan (EPG 325) https://www.facebook.com/mgmhduk

So Fox HD is just replacing it

So is there any impact on the separate MGM SD channel (which despite its name, operates a completely different schedule to MGM HD)?

Fox HD was one on my wish list.

Now just to get the "4"suite of channels (C4, E4, More4 and Film4) in HD and MTV Live HD and I'm pretty happy with that, anything else is tosh.

Oh - and BT Sport for 'free' - just like the old ESPN days:p

The folk in UPC seem to think that the two MGM channels show 'the same great movies', this is from the 'Horizon Max' page on the UPC link above....

MGM HD (325) is ceasing transmission on Thursday 16th January, but don’t worry, any recordings from this channel will be available for one month and the same great movies will be available on MGM SD (426).

MTV Live HD is under threat of closure itself at this stage.

They both had access to the MGM back catalogue, but operated completely different schedules. Even their interpretations of the famous MGM lion logo were slightly different.

Rumours of a major revamp of the MTV channels sooner rather than later, MGM HD had very low audience figures and its closure was first reported prior to Christmas.

AFAIK MGM SD is a JV with UPC so is fairly secure.

UPC are still lacking Watch - which now has an Irish variant and the CBS stations and Sony TV - but apart from those the line up is looking a lot stronger.

I have left out Sky Atlantic and SS F1 as I cannot see Sky allowing UPC carriage.

I imagine that when the protection period they have for Atlantic in the UK expires and they have to offer it to Virgin Media, who are now co-owned with UPC, they'll become available. Sky are required to offer their owned channels for cable carriage after a period of time, may be 36 months - been a long time since I needed to know that.

Sky F1 is on Virgin already - UPC may be using having Setanta as a reason not to bother as I imagine it wouldn't be cheap.

AFAIK the only channels they are required to offer to all platforms are Sky Sports 1 & 2, although this is on condition that FA Premier League games are not shown on Sky Sports 3 & 4. Sky keeping channels exclusive to DTH subscribers is certainly not new.

That doesn't make sense in the case of Sky Atlantic but if it is the case, it would be very easy to circumvent. Programs keep changing and all they'd have to do is create a new channel for premieres of new series, call it Sky Nova and stuff Sky Atlantic with repeats of the Simpsons.

A TV channel is just a bundle of whatever programs you decide to show on it on a particular day. Unless the regulation you're referring to applies specifically to original programming, it is meaningless and effectively unenforceable.

Ofcom would, eventually, give them a fairly robust slapping for that.

Platform owners who own channels cannot permanently withhold them from other platforms in the UK; and obvious attempts to circumvent Ofcom rules are also, obviously, banned.

Had Virgin retained Flextech and tried to remove carriage of Bravo etc from other operators the same would have happened. (They sold Flextech to Sky anyway)

Can't find Fox HD, if I manually select 176 it goes straight to RTE News Now (200), if I'm on 166 Fox+1 and press channel up, it also goes to RTE News Now on channel 200 so there's nothing between 166 and 200, the guide also shows nothing in that gap.

I'm on Horizon HD with the max package.

I would rather watch an 80's movie in HD that 5 back to back episodes of Family Guy. What a crock of $hit.

Sure doesn't look like hd on the horizon box. Maybe I need to reset? ?

No hd dog on screen, should there be?

Is RTE1 HD replacing SD RTE1? what about those of us not on UPC HD? Will we still have SD RTE 1

It is only 'replacing' RTE1 SD in the sense that someone with a HD box who selects '101' will get RTE1 HD while someone with an SD box will still get regular RTE1.

Why bother doing this for RTE and not sky 1 or sky living?

The on demand channel on 119 and the E Channel notice on 501 have both been removed from the EPG

Because the SD and HD versions are not identical channels, i.e. there are Irish commercials on the SD version but not HD - hence they're unlikely to do the swap

With 119 removed, how do you now access the on demand services? Ch.100 is of no use for on demand

Through the On Demand button on the remote or the On Demand option on the main menu. TV players can also be accessed through the red button on their associated channel.
