Dubai World Cup Carnival 2014- Meydan

The Dubai World Cup Carnival kicks off tomorrow at Meydan. I think this meeting deserves a thread of its own and tbh its far easier to see people's fancies and thoughts on it than trying to weed them out in the daily thread.Going by the results in the last few years Mike De Kock and Godolphin are the ones to watch for winners and rarely leave a meeting empty handed. The trouble is with which ones as they like throwing a few darts at some races and apparent stable first strings don't always win.

    My fancies for tommorrow's card;
    3.40- El Estruendoso NAP
    4.15- My Freedom
    4.50- Gabrial
    5.25- Brendan Brackan
    6.00- Anaerobio N.B.

Keeping stakes to a minimum for the first day or two. There should be a good few pointers coming from tomorrow's card and next weeks one for the rest of the carnival.

Keep an eye for variety club and vercingetorix.both are superstars.variety club been horse of the year twice in sa and vercingetorix already a multiple group winner beating lots if group 1 winners in last two races, lost Abit of weight in quarantine but will put it all back on,all mikes horses need a run due to 5 months travelling

Nice win for Anaerobio so puts me in front for day 1 (just about). Could have another win in him?

Aye, SFR and Kassiano are generally reliable sorts at Meydan. Think SFR was actually unbeaten until they brought him over to the UK, no idea why they did that.

Going to do an SDS Lucky in the opening 4 races which are:

    Autumn Lily 3.05
    Emirates Flyer 3.40
    Tha'ir 4.15

It looks like a good booking of rides so you never know. :pac:

4.15 Thair 5/1 takes the eye.Code Of Honor beat him last time but jockey booking suggests Thair is first choice. He has been gelded so handicaps will be his thing at the carnival and his run behind Toronado is by far this best form on offer. All his best form is on firm so this ultra quick surface will be a major plus. The only worry is his draw in 1 as he likes to come late and fast.2.30 Mutin 9/1 has been contesting Group races in Europe so wont have the same harsh quarantine problems faced by De Kocks SA runners. The field is made up of under priced handicappers that may improve but 9/1 about a horse running a few levels below his previous runs is outstanding value.Anyone wanting to have a bet on the dogs tonight[Sky 212] t2 Lode Esteem 9.06 is a good thing.Have taken 11/8 and 5/4 about a dog that should be 2/5. Less than 29 secs to collect handy money and bookies priced this up wrong big time.

Safety Check got something like a suspect ride there by Barzalona, could be just me but looks like they knew what was coming first and second from the start!

Kavanagh is some price on the blue here.

Gonna go for Mike de Kock's Lehaaf here. Too much boys in blue winning today.

He wasnt based in S.Africa (I think) so should have a strong chance here.

I clearly read it wrong so. Different owner I guess.

De Kock will surely get on the scoreboard next week, entries pending of course. Mars is going to make an appearance too sometime during the carnival.(world cup night and super Saturday possibly).

Week 4 onwards is when u will see the winners.im told mars isn't been pushed and they taking it slow.shea Shea and soft falling rain will run once only so as to be fresh for Europe.

Educate apparently makes his Dubai debut on Thursday 30th of Jan. Very much looking forward to seeing how he gets on over there.

You're right there.Last year he only had 2 winners in the 1st two weeks and about 12 or 13 winners at the rest of the carnival. I'm probably way off with them figures but it does show that even though he might be a slow starter mid carnival seems to be his peak time.Something to keep in mind with a view to making a profit.

There's a good write up too on his Meydan runners in today's RP. A lot of his better runners have the World cup night as their aim with maybe a prep run sometime before it.

I've heard a lot about his quarantine problems and horses being behind in work. Are they worse than other years?or is it just the media making a big issue out of it.

Yeah the horses hot to Dubai late and running about a month behind.they spend 30 days in Cape Town,90 days in Mauritius,21 days newmarket then 2-3 weeks in Dubai,so in other words no training for over 5months.

Trust me when I say the winners are coming.

Think he will do well over there as they usually go off at a stupid pace in front setting up for the late comes such as Eduacate, just needs tha bit of luck in running as always!

What races are they looking at Rossom? I'd imagine it's group races now or would he go off around top weight in a handicap

Yeah I think he'll do well over there too.

Haven't a clue what sort of races he's going over there for but given he's now rated 112 you'd have to assume it's group races all the way.

Hope Johnny has been earmarked to ride him there.

    Thursday Jan 23rd

    2.30- Merhee
Think it could be a good day for De Kock today. Fitness has to be taken on trust but with a good draw this could go close.

    4.15- Daddy Long legs
Formerly with AOB and won the UAE derby at the track in 2012. Has had a prep run so should have a good chance. Also Zip Top is interesting too for charlie Appleby. He hasn't ran since 2nd to Camelot in the racing post trophy and was banned for steroid use.

    4.50-Anaerobio N.B.
Won well in a handicap two weeks ago. This is a group race but he won well and possibly was undercooked so I'm confident he can make the step up in grade.

    5.25- El Estruendoso NAP
Bit of a puzzler with De Kocks running 3. However despite not being the 1st string today , I fancy El Estruendo who was a big eyecatcher 2 weeks ago running on late in a race with no pace. Probably needed the run so he should go much closer here.

Think Manalapan for Paddy Prendergast in the 4.15 is worth a bet at 8/1 with 365. Took to Dundalk really well in two starts there last October. Ran a good second behind Parish Hall staying on really well at the finish. Still fairly unexposed with only seven lifetime starts could go well if ready to run.

Spencer often takes some flack but that is one of the best rides you'll see all year on a horse who usually finds a way of getting beat!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,340 ✭✭✭sting60

Talking to the owner of Jamsie will need the run and will win in three weeks.I put this horse up as a big time Meydan winner.Marnane told them dont come over until end of Feb when I really fancy him.You call Barney a rouge.

Not often I load the gun these days, but 9/4 about Certify? Jaysus.

I couldn't back a Godolphin horse with any confidence let alone one off the track for over a year over using banned substances. The French filly is no mug, Certify will have to be right out of the top drawer to beat her on this ground.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 18,335 ✭✭✭✭UrbanSea

Flotilla is no mug but she is probably a 118 filly. Certify could have been the very best fully around last year bar Treve. Shame we didn't get to see her

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 2,475 ✭✭✭carpothepunk

Appleby didnt exactly hit the ground running, but has had a couple good winners over at Meydan, with just one big flop I can remember, Desert Wings, who is an absolute handicap blot, but a headcase of a horse who ran his race in the paddock.

Certify will probably win but what worries me is the drift in the market. I saw 4/6 when the market first opened and now she's 9/4.

She was never 4/6 irishracing had that as projected SP. She opened up 15/8 with PP last night and was a general 13/8 before I went to bed

Trade Storm in the 5.00 at Meydan looks over priced 8/1. He has been running in much better races than this the past year and acquitted himself very well, my only worry would be whether or not he will be race fit. Worth the risk for me.

No Bon tonight man. commerce ball last night. college bar soon and then Electric for Zane Lowe

My mistake. Think 13/8 was the proper sp i had seen. Either way she's a drifter.

Fair play lads she looks a nice prospect alright. Just seen the race there now.

Tasaday for me for the Godolphin double. Has serious group 1 form and some form behind the mighty Treve. 4/1 looks fair and she gets the fillies allowance.

    Tasaday Tasaday Tasaday

Tasaday was v poor! Never threatened tbh, De Kock is a big dawg is Dubai! Top quality horses.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,564 ✭✭✭kiers47

Not sure she would have won but she was done absolutely no favors by the false start.
She was on her toes before the restart and sweating quite badly.
Along with that he could not settle her in the race for the first 1/2 mile.
I would be putting a line through that run myself.
